Sinn Fein readying to back PSNI

It will come as little surprise to Slugger regulars to read about Sinn Fein’s alleged preparations to finally recognise the reformed police service. It was hinted at by a senior party spokesman to Slugger on election day last year. There have been some internal tensions too. The IRA was never equipped, nor by all accounts did enjoy its role as the ‘unofficial police force’. Last February’s (largely unreported) ‘Ballymurphy Pogrom‘ were followed by a concerted campaign against a single family (600 attacks at the last count) that the IRA were either unable or unwilling to bring to an end.

Those alleged preparations are based entirely on the interview of Gerry Kelly by Brian Rowan, also in the Belfast Telegraph.

An interview that mostly ignored the futuring involved by Kelly.

The Irish Independent has an interesting take on it from Bruce Arnold

“Certainly everything said by Gerry Kelly this week about policing put it on a finger that would make Struwelpeter’s digits look like stumps.”

  • Mick Fealty

Ah, I saw that. But I didn’t know it was Arnold’s. It had no bleeding byline on it!!

  • Garibaldy

Did anyone see Squinter praising the cops to high heavens for their arrest of an alleged joyrider in the New Lodge, and criticising the local PSF councillor for complaining? As good a sign as any that the constituency is being further prepared for this inevitable delvelopment.

  • Brenda

Well I don’t think SF is backing the peelers because of one family in ballymurphy, no matter how big or troublesome it was. They’ve known they were going to have to do this since Patten.
I’m wondering will Chris carry out his threat to resign if SF do a deal on policing (patten policing) rather than a new force?

  • slug

    Brenda

    Who is Chris?

(PS Are the poster formerly known as Busty Brenda?)

  • Brenda

    slug yeah

    Chris Gaskin.

  • eyeball

mi5 wont allow chris to resign

  • slug

Brenad – he seems to go pretty much with what the party line is so I can’t see him resigning somehow.

  • Brenda

slug I thought you were around when he stated on here that he would. I’m sure you were, you’ve been here some time.

    eyeball LOL.

  • “I’m wondering will Chris carry out his threat to resign if SF do a deal on policing (patten policing) rather than a new force?”

    Brenda

If Sinn Féin sign up to a police service which I could not support then I would not lend that force any semblence of legitimacy by asking others to support or join in my stead. If such a situtation arises my position would be untenable.

  • Brenda

Chris do you have any idea why the two councillors resigned, was it due to a deal on policing.

  • mi5 wont allow chris to resign

LOL, that was funny. Do you have any more jokes?

he seems to go pretty much with what the party line is so I can’t see him resigning somehow.

I am not a psychophant, if I disagree with something I will say so.

  • Brenda

I have no idea why the two councillors resigned

  • Ciaran damery

If Sinn Féin participate in British run councils. related to SS/RUC, then all I can say is -SHAME!

  • gotta wear shades

Pychophant, ha was that a freudian slip or what. Chris, was it law you were studying, if it was it has paid off as that was a beautiful piece of positioning you did above!

  • Twiggy

“I am not a psychophant, if I disagree with something I will say so.”

Indeed, you don’t even know the spelling of the word :-p

  • TAFKABO

I thought Chris gave himself just enough wiggle room in his post, he has a bright future ahead of him.

    As for Psychophant?

We should have a competition to see who comes up with the best definition.

  • heck

    Chris

If SF give support to the PSNI/UVF without a full acounting of RUC/ UVF collusion and you resign I will buy you a pint next time I am in Camlough or Forkhill.

  • Chris-

“If Sinn Féin sign up to a police service which I could not support then I would not lend that force any semblence of legitimacy by asking others to support or join in my stead. If such a situtation arises my position would be untenable.”

But what is the definition of a service you could support? What exactly would have to be achieved beyond what is already in place for you to support it? For instance, if SF signed up tomorrow, would you support it? What exactly would SF have to fail to secure that would cause you to leave the party if they signed up at that juncture? Just trying to pin down exactly what demands you wish to have implemented that would stop you quitting the party 😉

“If Sinn Féin sign up to a police service which I could not support then I would not lend that force any semblence of legitimacy by asking others to support or join in my stead. If such a situtation arises my position would be untenable.” ….Chris

What a load of sanctimonious schoolboy drivel.
Your position is then clearly untenable – please have your hissy fit now.

  • Chris, was it law you were studying, if it was it has paid off as that was a beautiful piece of positioning you did above!

    Yes it was law

if SF signed up tomorrow, would you support it?

    No

    Mal One

Whatv in the name of sweet jesus are you on about? I was asked a question by Brenda and I answered it.

  • ingrammartin

    Hi,

    Told ya so.

    Martin

  • excellent response

if SF signed up tomorrow, would you support it?

    No

Ah, but if they sign up in December, or January, or February, would you support it then?

  • Wombat

IT’S ABOUT TIME THAT THE SHINNERS SIGNED UP TO POLICING.

  • Nic

Poor ould Chris. Hoisted by his own petard, eh? Ah well, had to happen sooner or later.

Although it may well be later than you think, because somehow this smells of previous patterns of SF man’u’rings.
First it’s leaked or hinted that they’re conceding massive ground to move negotiations along. Then when the actual details of the proposal come out for anyone that cares to read them, it seems they haven’t moved that far at all. Doesn’t matter though, because most don’t really care to read the things and only remember the dart of hope that the hype gave them and they don’t want to have it dashed.
But unionists must read the thing, carefully, and accordingly stall at the less than satifsfactory solution proposed. Cue outraged provos foaming at unionist intrasigence and what have you.

    It’s classic mopery.
They did it most spectacularly at the decomissioning circus and would have gotten away with it if McDowell hadn’t done the right thing and they hadn’t confirmed him by kidnapping and terrorising Northern Bank employees.

So don’t be holding yer breaths hoping for movement any time soon….

  • Wombat

Interesting post Nic, but does anyone trust Sinn Fein when they put the spin machine in place. As you know every word is carefully scripted and stage managed so that in Sinn Fein Speak it doesn’t actually mean what it is supposed to mean. (SF have their own dictionary) It’s a wonder that Sinn Fein hasn’t wised up to the fact they don’t need a spin machine to peddle their lies as people have caught on to SF double speak.

  • Jim

Any surrender comes with The Terms of surrender that any victorious enemy insists upon, this includes accepting the legitamacy of your opponents agaents of law and order. Republicans have a selective memory always complaining about the old RUC behaviour toward them, nonetheless have they forgotten how the IRA murdered the RUC on thier way home from work? All the soundbites about no one having the monopoly on hurt-pain etc all sounds a bit rich to me. The IRA along with Mr Paisley etc started this thing off, ending in 3,500 deaths with nothing to show for it except the unconditional acceptance of anglo saxon political norms and values, Just go for it Sinn Fein on policing,SF-IRA have nothing else to lose, because thier was nothing to gain in the first place.
