PSNI lifts pub ‘siege’…

For about ten or fifteen minute one inner city pub was ‘under seige’ last night when one customer, ejected for rowdy behaviour, took his ‘frustration’ out on the outside of the building. When a PSNI patrol turned up, the said gentleman was forced to the ground and physically subdued, there was loud cheering from customers inside the bar. Ironically, the same bar where Gerry Adams took his first job back in the sixties.

  • McGrath

So, its not an SF bar anymore?

Point of your thread Mick? Right?

  • Moochin photoman

Were you out celebrating ure birthday Mick?
Price of pints is shocking eh?

  • crow

Maybe it was the hairy one who was ejected out of the bar.

  • slug

The PSNI is now 20% Catholic and that’s rising by 2% per year.

This is a historic change in the composition of Northern Ireland’s police and bound to have a big impact on the broad acceptability of the police.

I guess the message of Mick’s piece is how the PSNI are now able to perform operations like this with broad support.

  • GurnyGub

The other barman did all the work and less talkin’ anyway.

  • B e m u s ed

I take it that this was the Duke of York?

  • Jonny

Am I the only one who didn’t read ANY ulterior motive or hidden agenda in Mick’s post?

  • Occasional Commentator

    Jonny,
I too noticed an ulterior motive – a deliberate grammar mistake. It should be ‘ten or fifteen minutes‘, not ‘ten or fifteen minute’

    🙂

  • Nevin

I don’t suppose the customer is an occasional poster here, Slartibuckfast …..

  • Donnie

Was the “siege” in Raytheon in Derry not newsworthy?

  • Donnie

Sorry I see the Raytheon thread now…

  • Moochin photoman

Been known to have a few pints around and abouts meself…the guiness can be a bit hit or miss but other than that its a good lil pub.

  • James D

The duke of york isnt a ‘catholic’ bar, all sorts go there. In fact, your likely to find more english people than anything else.

Incidently i’m away there for a pint tonight! Brilliant place, love it!

  • alanonon

no m8, slartibuckfast can be seen down near the albert clock with his paedo pals.

  • Moochin photoman

    dont be childish

  • Comrade Stalin

The Duke is indeed a great bar. Some people seem to think that just because GA worked there while he was a teenager means that it’s a chuckie drinking hole. Not so.

I actually like the John Hewitt slightly better though.

  • SlugFest

The Duke of York is a great bar — Thursday night sessions are wonderful and the crowd (except for this one crazy guy, apparently) is always friendly.

  • GurnyGub

    Slugfest
On your rec. this ex towny now culchy (ie’s?)will try a pint there. But how could you match Jimmy in the sixties shoutin’ upstairs for his mammie?

  • SlugFest

    GurnyGub,

I should tell you i’m just a blow-in myself. Only get to Belfast one or two times a year if i’m lucky.

The Duke was recommended to me from new yorkers (homegrown and expats) right before my first trip. since then (five years) i go every time i’m in town. been there with friends (from belfast … townies) and all by myself — in either circumstance people make you feel more than welcome … just sit down at a table and you can either zone out and enjoy the music or strike up a conversation with a neighbor.

(though i must say as the years wear on it takes a bit more time for people to come around when they realize i’m american — not that i blame them!)

in short (or long, really), you should definitely stop in for a pint or two!

  • Garibaldy

    Rubbish bar. Overhyped.

  • SlugFest

    GurnyGub,

Pay Garibaldy no mind … he was probably the one they had to kick out last night 🙂

Try it out, and on the off chance that you don’t like it, just go around the corner to the John Hewitt (though i myself always feel pressured to say something intellectual and droll when there — i’m sure that’s just me, though)

  • Garibaldy

Not that huge a fan of the John Hewitt either. Pretentious.

  • SlugFest

    Garibaldy,

Ok, so we agree on the John Hewitt.

Hope you know i was just ‘taking the piss’ as they say.

Enjoy the night … wherever it takes you.
