“That past is a long way off”

The Guardian have updated their online collection of short stories with a summer fiction special, including A Summer Job by Colm Tóibín and the thoughtful At Olivehill by William Trevor.

You neglected to say that they’re also serializing Ronan Bennett’s novel ZUZWANG. He’s a real writer but out of favour with the Oirish.

Toibin and Trevor’s stuff is yawn inducing. Alice Taylor having followed a creative writing course.

  • Pete Baker

Each to their own, Mr Satan, each to their own ;o)

  • The Devil

Oh yeah? Quote me a decent line from either and we’ll see how it measures up against Bennett’s prose.

One hour later, Pete. Give up? I did too. Not a single line worth quoting amid that tired old lazy prose. Who told these guys they could write? Pathetic.

  • Pete Baker

    Mr Satan

Your enthusiasm for Bennett is admirable.. but what makes you think I don’t rate him as a writer?.. or that I have any interest in using other writers’ words in an online pissing contest.

Read what you like.. take from it what you will.. and enjoy. :O)

  • The Devil

“but what makes you think I don’t rate him as a writer?”

Er, because you blogged Toibin and Trevor but not Bennett?

  • Pete Baker

I blogged the additions to the short story collection.. It’s something I picked up on last year, and I’m noting the new short stories.

The Bennett serialisation is there at the link for those who are interested.

And you have highlighted its presence. Well done! :o)

  • The Devil

Thanks. I’ll hit Ronan for 5% of the royalties :o)

  • Pete Baker

It worth a try I suppose.. but I’d have thought you already had him under contract? ;o)

  • The Devil

But seriously, Pete, and I’m not targeting you especially, the Guardian decides to serialize one of Ireland’s finest novelists and it’s not blogged on Slugger? How often does this happen?

  • Pete Baker

You’re asking the wrong question. It’s not why we miss something, it’s how we manage to catch so much.

That serialisation is what? 32 instalments? Should we note each one or wait ’til it’s completed?

To be honest I haven’t been captured by the approach.. I’ve read some of the ‘chapters’.. but my time/interest is limited.

  • The Devil

“That serialisation is what? 32 instalments? Should we note each one or wait ‘til it’s completed?”

No of course not. Just the news that it’s being serialized. And that IS news.

“To be honest I haven’t been captured by the approach.. I’ve read some of the ‘chapters’.. but my time/interest is limited.”

Take it from me then: Bennett can write. He’s a wonderful stylist and deadly accurate, which is more than can be said for sloppy old T and T.
