Knife culture doubles in eight years

PSNI statistician Mark Evans revealed knife crime has doubled in Northern Ireland since 1998. The nationwide approach is two pronged an amnesty and education as the “carrot” and tougher laws being drafted as the stick. Will it temper a growing culture of violence?

Sure it will… I mean, look at what strict gun-control laws did for Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Of course, a prohibition on baseball bats might make a little more sense. One wonders how many baseballs are actually sold in N.I. to go with all those bats.

    What do I mean?

Let us begin with the obvious. When you pass a law to limit the weaponry of a population, what portion of the population actually heeds said law?

Answer: The honest, decent, law-abiding citizens. These folks, in the overwhelming majority of cases, aren’t the problem you’re trying to solve.

    Therefore, what have you accomplished?

Answer: Nothing positive. The law-abiders are now disarmed, which may have a marginal effect on violence, but the criminals — the target of this effort — will still be armed. In fact, by disarming their intended prey, you have made their task, be it robbery or murder, that much easier.

There is no such thing as a “dangerous” weapon. There are only dangerous people.
