Meet Jimmy Porter, blogger…

Nice profiling interview with Jimmy of Desolation Row by Red Mum, a happy Northern exile in Dublin. I was intrigued by his remarks on the often poor quality of discussion here on Slugger (though we have had some highlights recently). He explains that it “is sometimes nothing more than an incoherent and unintelligent shouting match between people who are unprepared to compromise and do what Atticus Finch said: “Climb into other people’s skin and walk around in it.” Great overheard after Mass story for Easter…

    Mick

It’s Desolation Row as in the Dylan song not Desolate Row.

“is sometimes nothing more than an incoherent and unintelligent shouting match between people who are unprepared to compromise and do what Atticus Finch said: “Climb into other people’s skin and walk around in it.”

But sometimes it is more that that. That’s why it’s worth it.

  • TL

Yes and sometimes in all of the screaming you learn a great deal about people and the issues/ideas that they cannot let die.
Re: Mass Story…You’re not supposed to get anything for easter that you can’t eat, right?

  • Mick Fealty

On that very point, it’s good to have you back Henry!

  • Joe

    Hush TL
That smart kid might be watching.

  • Henry94

Does anybody ever give up sectarianism for Lent?

  • TAFKABO

Does anybody ever give up sectarianism for Lent?

I’d be willing to forgoe it for a spell, but not for some catholic festival.

  • Henry94

I don’t think they believe in it. It’s more a Catholic thing 😉

  • Henry94

    TAFKABO

It’s no wonder we get on so well!

  • TAFKABO

    Henry

You do know that I deliberately cultivate my friendship with you just so that I can say some of my best friends are…..

    BTW.
In both our attempts at humour, notice that I went for the self deprecation and you went for the sneaky dig at themmuns….

    ;-p

  • Henry94

    TAFKABO

Actually I was satirising the nationalist assumption that we can’t be sectarian.

  • TAFKABO

Oops, well see what happens when you use subtlety on a prod?

  • Dread Cthulhu

TAFKABO: “Oops, well see what happens when you use subtlety on a prod? ”

    Nope… O:)

  • missfitz

Watching the lurve fest between henry and taf…. i just wonder why that chap felt there was a dearth of intellgent conversation on slugger. Cannot figure it out at all

  • Sometimes it is a great debate, other times it’s not. I am waiting for the debate on bloody sunday/devolution/Sinn Fein/IRA/DUP/ something else that will go all the way back to Dermott MacMurrough and Strongbow.

I.e I can see the day when someone will say “The IRA wouldn’t have needed to be formed if Strongbow didn’t come over here and slap Dervogilla about”
