Signs of change in Ballymena…

THE Everything Ulster blogger was pleased to see the UDA mural beside Harryville’s Catholic church removed and replaced with an Ulster Scots design. It was certainly unusual to see photos of the parish priest and a UDA political rep chatting under the new mural – which, unless I’m mistaken (no live pics online yet), features the older Irish version of the Ulster flag – very different from the Northern Ireland flag normally favoured by unionists! Of course, the real test will come in the summer – in recent years, the church has been forced to move services over the marching season because of loyalist intimidation.

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported.
