Trimble on Hardtalk…

Cue Intro: “He won a Nobel Peace Prize for his part in the historic Belfast Agreement. Since then he’s lost his seat in parliament, his leadership of the Ulster Unionists and the support of the Protestant community”. However, David Trimble is heavily critical of the government’s approach to the current round of talks, and indeed the DUP’s plan for a shadow Assembly – “a something, rather than a nothing”. Interestingly he argues that this is simply tinkering with the institutions and not dealing with the underlying problem. “They’ve [British Government] got to speak very clearly to Republicans and tell them what they now need to do is to embrace the democratic process wholeheartedly; to stop their shillyshallying about policing. It’s quite wrong to have people who aspire to be part of the government of a region and at the same time to refuse to accept the legal system”. Thanks for the heads up Gordy!

We are reader supported. Donate to keep Slugger lit!

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported. Help us keep Slugger independent by becoming a friend of Slugger. While we run a tight ship and no one gets paid to write, we need money to help us cover our costs.
