Hain defencs on the run bill

As ePolitix notes, Peter Hain takes an Op Ed in The Times to defend his framing of legislation to allow the so-called on-the-runs to come home, some of them after thirty years as fugitives from the law. It is, he confirms, a quid pro quo for the IRA’s decommissioning.

    Got there before me, Mick.

I’ll just point out that it’s an Op Ed aimed at MPs, more than anyone else.

And according to that Op Ed by Hain it’s as much a quid pro quo for returning to the Assembly as anything else.. which raises a few questions.

But I was going to note this as well. Hain claims that –

No one should be under any illusion that the choice is stark: either these “on the run” suspects continue to run free abroad, never having to account for their crimes, or we put them through these special procedures..

It’s a claim that doesn’t quite tally with the news that one former OTR has just gone on trial in Belfast after being extradited last year from Spain

    Interesting quote:

“the choice is stark: either these “on the run” suspects continue to run free abroad, never having to account for their crimes, or we put them through these special procedures”

The choice should be: either these “on the run” suspects continue to run free abroad, never having to account for their crimes, or they come to NI and go to prison for their crimes.

Slug, how many PSNI and RIR members are currently on the run and living abroad having stolen files from castlereagh and passed them on to terrorists? this is one of many criminal acts by the “security forces” and in no way the most serious, any one know of any BA intelligence officers forced to flee following relevations of directing terrorist agents in the murder of innocent people or assisting in the importation of weapons from SA.
Surely this is as much a get out for the government as anyone.
A proper Truth Commission to to find out who did what in NI over the past 50 years is what is needed, if charges are brought against them or not.

Finn69 – cour comments are ok with me. I don’t care WHO the people were and what side they were on. Not even remotely do I care what side they were on believe me. They should be punished, not let off.

  • Totally agree Slug
