The view from Ardoyne…

PA had a reporter in Danny Molly’s Bar when the IRA statement was broadcast. The major emotion was fear for the possibility that they were to be left defenceless in the face of loyalist paramilitaries – who still have all their guns and show few signs of giving them up.

Defenceless – no – they still have the dissidents to protect them – they had quite a few blast bombs a few short days ago.

If they helped shape the PSNI to be the force they want then that might also help.

The IRA offered defiance not defence for the most part. A crackdown on any loyalist paramilitaries who attacked catholics would probably carry the support of most Unionists, who rarely voted for their political alter-egos and despise the gangsterism and abuses now associated with them.

The IRA will not leave these communities defenceless. Weapons will undoubtedly have been retained as a defensive last resort, and if unionists have aproblem with this, then tough.

“Weapons will undoubtedly have been retained as a defensive last resort, and if unionists have aproblem with this, then tough.”

Is that the official SF line?

  • PS

Yes Beano, Sinn Féin are in the habit of making official statements through anonymous posters on a web log in the late hours of the night.

Surely the old chestnut of the IRA as ‘defenders’ of the nationalist community was debunked long ago. One of the contributing factors to the 1994 ceasefire was the intensifying loyalist campaign of the early 1990’s, which the IRA was powerless to stop. Tit for tat violence, which was all they could do, could hardly be called defence.

Nationalists have nothing to fear from Loyalists.(what are they loyal to btw Money, BMWs…They are certainly not any form of patriots but I digress..)Loyalists or Criminals as I prefer to call them are too busy fighting each other to worry about the Nationalist Community. What the Nationalist Community need to focus on is anti social behaviour and youth crime within their community. Unionist communities need to do the same of course maybe they could try doing it together (OMG sounds very Alliance Pary that doesn’t it sorry!)

What the record shows however, is that the infighting eventually also includes attacks on Catholics in interface communities as the loyalist groups prove their credentials as “defenders” of their communities.
