The board of the Abbey Theatre has resigned en masse after irregularities emerged in the financial control of the Republic’s national theatre. Although the Arts Council has guaranteed the wages of staff in the short term, it described the theatre’s situation “critical and extremely serious“. However it seems unlikely that it will lead to closure as Arts Minister John O’Donoghue is to impose new forms of corporate governance, in the wake of a damning report from KMPG.
