Rory Gallagher Honoured

The Irish Independent reports that the late, great Rory Gallagher is “the first Irish star to have a theatre named after him in his own country.” The unveiling of a plaque by his brother Donal took place at the Rory Gallagher Theatre at the end of a four day tribute festival in Ballyshannon, county Donegal.Bluesman Rory feted in home town

Ballyshannon already has a shrine and commemorative plaques will be running summer walking tours and there are plans to open a museum dedicated to this great man of Ulster.

    Great thread.

Favourite tracks? Too many to mention. Top 5 albums Against the Grain, Live in Europe, Irish Tour 74, Photo-Finish, Deuce.

I was luck enough to see Rory live a few times and I have never been at another gig that even comes close.

Rory Gallagher was born in Ballyshannon, but I think he moved to Cork when he was very young, didn’t he? Still, I guess Ballyshannon needs all the help it can get to attract tourists ๐Ÿ™‚
By the way, are there any classic albums of his that anyone would recommend as an introduction to his music? I only know one song, Tattoo’d Lady.

Sorry about the re-post, and I think henry 94 just answered my question as well.

Henry – I saw him first concert when he went on tour Edinburgh in 1975 (?) – wonderful. Tatooed Lady and Million Miles away,Bullfrog Blues, Catfish – all superb. I must have seen him half a dozen times – saw him lay out a member of the stage staff who was too rough with a fan. Favourite Guitarist.I remember the shock on hearing of his unexpected death.

Cork is doing a lot of stuff for Rory as part of the year of culture thing.

His father, Danny, was from Derry

But his mother, Monica is from Cork and still lives there. Rory grew up in McCurtin Street when his grandmother had a pub (Roche’s Bar). He belongs to us all.

‘I could have had religion’.The way we he got across the sheer pathos of a soul in anguish.Mind-boggling!
The first 7 years of his life were spent in Ballyshannon which IMHO just about qualifies him as an Ulsterman.
He was one of the few ‘boggers’for which us middleclass teenage Dubs had any respect.

    Davros : “Them boys can’t have him Henry – he’s ours ;)”

    You’re welcome to him!

Seriously my class mates in the 1970’s split into two groups, those that went “progressive” liking Gallagher, Wishbone Ash, Led Zep. and Jethro Tull amongst others and those of us who went “glam” Bowie, T.Rex, Sweet etc. I was in the latter camp, and I’m delighted I made the right choice.

Does it have to be either/or ? Or is everything Manichean on this feckin’ Island ?

  • ????

I was lucky enough to have seen him play at the Ulster hall on the 5th Jan 1984. Absoulelty amazing. Have all his cd’s, my son loves him too and still watches the video from that night, even though he was still in the womb at that point.

If our Eurovision correspondent doesn’t get it then we should be willing to accept that in a spirit of tolerance and charity and not one of smug superiority. At least we should try.
