Ahern threatens legal action against British…

FRESH from being named as European of the Year, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has threatened legal action against the British Government for not releasing files on the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

The Taoiseach said he believes that MI5 and MI6 are refusing to hand over information to Tony Blair, which is better than making it up, I suppose, but a huge embarrassment nonetheless.

One suspects that the Prime Minister is in no real position to put his security services under the cosh at such a delicate time, but such political cowardice wouldn’t be unusual for Blair.

Gooooooo Bertie. For all the good it will do.

  • don

    Bertie’s started electioneering early

  • Darrell Monteith

His own little state imported guns for the IRA with senior government approval and also acted as a safe harbour for the sectarian murder gangs of the IRA for years. Mr Ahern has little to chirp about.

  • CavanMan

Did Irish security services bomb your country causing the deaths of 34 people, Darrell, unless you can prove they did, and prove that the Irish government imported and supplied weapons to the IRA,then quit spouting such rubbish.

“Did Irish security services bomb your country causing the deaths of 34 people”

No they sent up army officers, provided money, weapons and safe haven to help create the organisation to do the bombing and shooting of which there is ample evidence. An organisation that has killed hundreds. A refusal to share files is not an admission of guilt.

    Darrell –

provide some substance for the allegation that the state provided a safe harbour for the sectarian murder gangs of the IRA

Or else admit you were just peddling lies.

  • Neal

A refusal to share files is not an admission of guilt.

Perhaps not, but it ain’t far away.

The evidence is simple – The refusal to extradite to the UK suspects for republican murders and other attacks for almost twenty years.

  • PatMcLarnon

Has Bertie told Mc Dowell, handbags will thrown over this one.
Plus he can expect a few more bashings from Sir Anthonys stable, can’t go around threatening those who tossed him his knighthood.

    Fair Deal

The evidence is simple – The refusal to extradite to the UK suspects for republican murders and other attacks for almost twenty years.

Is that the strongest evidence you’ve got for this ludicrous claim? That a bunch of men in wigs in the Four Courts deemed it uncertain that the people in their custody would get a fair trial in the UK? And I suppose you are going to tell me that history proved them wrong?

Name a few people that were refused extradition that didn’t end up being ‘safely haboured’ in Portlaoise Prison?

The Loyalists/British intelligence may have been responsible for the worst attrocities in the Republic during the troubles, but republican paramilitaries always, and to this date have posed the greatest threat to the stability of this state. Darrel made a ridiculous statement. I would have hoped for better from you, Fair Deal than trying to shore him up.

    Pat –

from what I’ve heard from Sean Ardagh who headed up the Dail committee, they’ve absolved Paul Murphy and Tony Blair of blame for this and are pointing the finger at British Intelligence, almost sounded like they’d okayed it with Blair and Murphy – who are committed to this under the GFA. So the Bean Baron and his former columnist should be ok with it too…
