Any news on the polling in your area…

I’m off home now. The verification of the votes will take most of the morning tomorrow, so don’t expect anything sensible before one or two in the afternoon. And the results may take us well into the evening! See youse then. In the meantime, please post any good information you have on how it went in your area?!

  • Reds under the Beds

very anecdotal – but I have heard reports from Derry that the SDLP are quite downbeat tonight. Again I stress that this is anecdotal.

Sorry I have no more info than that

  • Davros

Thanks for all your work today Mick.

  • Gonzo

Latest: Hermon polled well, Burnside reckoned to be in trouble.

  • peteb

    Gonzo

If true.. that would fit with Trimble’s prediction.

  • peteb

Admittedly on a few sets of figures.. but Mid-Ulster seems to be looking at over 70% turn-out…

I refer you to Nicholas for the general trend in this constituency.

  • Gonzo

DUP seem to think they’ve got East Antrim and South Belfast…

  • Sam Maguire

I heard on a radio news bulletin SF believe they’ve taken Foyle by 1,000 to 2,000 votes & DUP think they’ve got SB

  • George

It looks like Durkan has made it in Derry, news has it that the turn out is up 4%.
Shinners not happy at close of polls compared to their cocky and over confident approach throughout the day in Derry.

Any word on whats been happening in Upper Bann or Lagan Valley?

  • David

Word on the ground in Lagan Valley is that things are looking good for Donaldson. He seems to be comfortably ahead of McCrea, margin of at least 2:1. No real surprise.

  • George

God what is happening tonight, has all the chucks gone to bed early in Derry or have they realised that Mitch is not going to make it.

  • Sam Maguire

    PA News is reporting

“In Upper Bann, where the Rev Ian Paisley’s Democratic Unionists are hopeful of capturing David Trimble’s constituency, initial reports suggested the overall turnout could be around 65% to 70%.

DUP candidate David Simpson’s election team were pleased with their heartlands in Portadown and Lurgan.

In the key area of Banbridge, which many pundits believe the UUP must win, turnout was estimated at 60% to 65%.

Sinn Fein was content with the turnout of the party’s core vote in the battleground Foyle constituency, where general secretary Mitchel McLaughlin is hoping to capture former SDLP leader John Hume’s seat.

Sinn Fein was also pleased with West Tyrone, Fermanagh and South Tyrone, and the target seat of Newry and Armagh where its candidate Conor Murphy is the strong favourite to top the poll.

During the evening rush, polling stations in Newry were reporting hour-long queues as voters cast their Westminster ballots under the first-past-the-post electoral system and their local council ballots under a single transferable vote system.

In the DUP’s target constituency of South Antrim, supporters of Ulster Unionist David Burnside were concerned at reports that the turnout was 55% to 60%, fearing that could enable the Rev William McCrea to regain the seat.

The DUP was also hopeful about its prospects in East Antrim and in South Belfast, where the party was reporting strong turnouts in working-class loyalist neighbourhoods such as the Belvoir estate, Donegall Pass and the Cregagh Road.

Ulster Unionists were more confident about their candidate Lady Sylvia Hermon’s prospects of holding on to the seat in North Down, bolstered by support from the cross-community Alliance Party.

Unionists in East and North Belfast reported a 55% turnout in their areas.”

  • Chris Gaskin

SDLP took a battering in Newry and Armagh, I predict electoral meltdown in South Armagh.

  • Darrell Monteith

Our local polling station in Tyrone produced a turnout of 75% which is not the highest we have ever seen and most of the non-voters were nationalists. We have seen up to 90+% in the past perhaps there is no big struggle here this time and it is likely that Doherty will be returned comfortably.

There a bit of a local storm when SF removed a lot of Dr Deeney’s posters in Carrickmore and also a youth believed to be a member of SF youth wing, spat on Dr Deeney’s 11 yr old daughter and also poured fruit juice on her on her way to school recently. They are not nice people – so whats new !!!!

  • Paul O

“SF removed a lot of Dr Deeney’s posters in Carrickmore”

Because no other party EVER does this.

“a youth believed to be a member of SF youth wing, spat on Dr Deeney’s 11 yr old daughter and also poured fruit juice on her on her way to school recently”

Disgusting if true, embarrassing if he WAS a member of Ogra SF, but he/she doesnt represent SF or their voters. I could into a lot of ‘whataboutery’ here, and will do so to expose any hypocrasy in future posts!

  • pakman

    Gonzo

just a health warning on Hermons’ good polling which rather depends on how Alderdices’ vote held. UUP cognoscenti were not over confident at close of poll.

  • kitty

And now for the true story. The Doctors daughter was the one who threw a bottle of mineral at another child on the bus and it was thrown back at her. The doctor’s wife followed the bus from their stop to the stop on the other side of the village and admonished a group of boys – only to find that it has actually been her own child who was at fault. The story made the wee Monday paper, the Omagh Christian Brothers school got involved and the Deeney’s were shown to have been wrong- it was their own child who had started the ruckus. As for the child being involved in SF youth- also inaccurate, but as most people in Carrickmore are Shinners ( voters but hardly all party members) it was of course an easy claim to make.
As to the posters, most of the locals feel the Deeney’s or people associated with them probably removed the posters themselves. Sinn Fein had no reason to remove the posters. Dr. Deeney has been proven to be a dishonest candidate before he even got to the starting gate- his SDLP emails etc.

Nice to see that the ages-old tradition of dragging kids into politics is alive and well in Carrickmore.

  • fay-ree

The SDLP was bullish yesterday, but relying upon turnout, arguing that a high turnout benefited them. However, none of them knew what the turnout actually was and it turnsout to be around 64%(if local radio is accurate). That’s almost exactly what it was in the 2003 Assembly elections, when the Shinners were less than 2000 votes behind. The only thing that might swing it for Durkan is if he got a clatter of tactical unionist votes from the Waterside. And it would need to be a fair oul clatter – although I hear the DUP is predicting that might happen.I still think the Shinners have just done it….

  • kitty

Yes, the Deeeny’s really should be ashamed of themselves. They seemed to think it would help Kieran’s vote? Ages-old tradition?- No it seems to be quite a new development that coincided with Deeney’s candidacy. Shame of Deeney, there seems to be no level he won’t stoop to.

  • slug9987

    Is Carrickmore an unpleasant area?

  • Davros

It’s a republican stronghold slug. And same as everywhere else it has the good, the bad and the ugly. It shouldn’t be demonised even if it’s one of those places from which Irish-American trolls claim to come.

  • kitty

Rather it is a lovely place. Seems to have taken a turn for the worse since Dr. Deeney ( a well-respected local doctor) decided to become a politician. This story was another mistake on the part of the candidate. It seems his campaign will do just about anything.
The story was a storm in a tea-cup, children on a school bus, that he tried to materialise on and it all blew up in his face when it was shown to be his own family instigated the incident. Omagh CBS is said to furious at the incident as their students were slandered by the Deeney campaign. An ugly incident.

    Is Carrickmore an unpleasant area?

  • kitty

The woman in your cyber-engagement claims to be from Carmen? I never knew that.

DUP vote in North Down council election “well up” according to candidate inside the count. Westminster boxes not opened yet. It’s going to be close…

  • Keith M

DUP vote in North Down council election “well up” according to candidate inside the count. Westminster boxes not opened yet.

Why are they opening the council votes first. These aren’t supposed to be counted until Monday. Surely the General Election votes take precedence?

  • belfastwhite

I think they open the council election boxes first to see if any Westminister ballots were posted in the wrong box! I would have thought common sense would have told you that Keith.

  • Hansolo

    sounds like DT is safe

  • John

The Stoops have bombed in Newry/Armagh – Sinn Féin to win by at the very least 6,000

  • Dessertspoon

Hansolo – “sounds like DT is safe”

Is this the same DT I think you’re talking about??? What is he safe from??? Is it losing (did he use the force?)??? Or is it winning???

  • Hansolo

Upper Bann has not gone over to the dark side…yet
catholic vote coming out for Trimble

  • kitty

Record turn-out in Newry/South Armagh? Did I hear that right? Looks like sdlp will get wiped out there, but is anyone surprised at that.

The Stoops have bombed in Newry/Armagh – Sinn Féin to win by at the very least 6,000

  • Hansolo

    Burnside has lost
most likely SDLP in SB but MM is running close

  • kitty

80% turn-out in South Armagh- that’s amazing. Go Conor!!!!!

  • Hansolo

    Hermon looking good in ND.
SDLP have most likely won SB

  • shitstirrer

“80% turn-out in South Armagh- that’s amazing. Go Conor!!!!!”

hmm yes, wonder how many of those voters are alive?!

Did anyone hear Gerry Adams speech? He was mouthing off about how people were discriminated against because they forgot to bring ID and thus weren’t allowed to vote. Come on now, its hardly rocket science to remember to bring ur passport, drivers license or electoral card. Every newspaper was telling us how to vote. If someone is so dim they can’t even remember to bring ID to the polling station, then I think its quite reasonable to deny them a vote.

  • Chris Gaskin

The SDLP are being wiped off the face of the earth in South Armagh.

I stand by my prediction of 5 out of 5 in the Slieve Gullion DEA, a Historic first.

The sdlp are being sent a wreath from the South Armagh voters.

You heard it here first, Sinn Féin overall control of Newry and Mourne council.

  • Chris Gaskin

“hmm yes, wonder how many of those voters are alive?!”

    All of them!!!!1

  • Davros

Chris – remember to be magnanimous in victory !
People might think that you were gloating 😉

  • kitty

You may of course have read this week, that the the electorate commission was investigated by themselves and found disciminatory practises within their own rules, mainly against Nationalist voters.

  • shitstirrer

    gaskin

there is still a majority of people who would rather poke their own eyes out than vote for Sinn Fein, that includes many nationalists and the vast majority of the republic of Ireland who think more of democracy than Sinn Fein/IRA does.

  • Chris Gaskin

“Chris – remember to be magnanimous in victory !
People might think that you were gloating ;)”

    I am gloating 🙂

I have been told for months by sdlp people that the tide had turned and the sdlp would take Newry and Armagh, Recapture seats in South Armagh etc

And now I have been proven correct, they are finished!!

Can I ask were the recent sdlp cheerladers are today?

They seem to have departed this sphere of combat with their tails between their legs

  • shitstirrer

    kitty

catch a grip, if someone can’t even remember to bring their ID to a polling station then they really don’t deserve to vote. Its a minimal requirement.

*by the way, Gerry’s grip of the irish language is appalling

  • JEFF

Chris Gaskin, you are fat and a liar.

That makes you a big fat liar

  • CavanMan

    Jeff
when you have to call someone fat,It shows You’ve lost your argument.PATHETIC.
The Council elections are much more boring to watch than the Westminister or the Assembly elections, although the people elected to these councils actually work,so i do recognise their importance.
