Kelly McBride backs Labour in Brent East

Kelly McBride is backing Labour candidate Yasmin Quershi in Brent East , London – (the cosntitency with the largest Irish population in Britain). This is after assurances from both the candidate and the London Mayor, Ken Lingstone, that they will help her in the campaign for her murdered brother. Will this mean that this flagship Irish constutency will revert to Labour once again?

Sorry about the typos – my fist time posting and I got a bit confused and distracted with the technical processes invloved!

Here’s the the link to Tom Griffin’s article in the Irish World that i was referring to:

  • Davros

There’s the difference between the British System and the RM system. No bogeyman warned her off from becoming involved in politics.

  • Dec

    Davros

Unfortunately, it’s the British system of welcoming back into their army convicted murderers of innocent, unarmed Irishmen that forced her to become involved in politics.

  • spirit-level

Ahh Davros are we having an orange afternoon
That article a little to green for you;)

good ol Red Ken I say, always says wot e finks.
I remember the comment he made about ” the need for the saudi royal family to swing from lapmposts” whilst pious Tony Blair was actively talking about our Saudi “Allies”. Hypocracy

re your comment, the stakes are a little higher in norn iron i’d hope you’d agree.. I’m not entirely comfortable with MM’s menace at times, but there’s alot of mischief with the DUP, its just better hidden that’s all..

  • Davros

Unfortunately, it’s the British system of welcoming back into their army convicted murderers of innocent, unarmed Irishmen that forced her to become involved in politics.

But it’s all so different when the innocent unarmed Irishman who has been murdered is a victim of IRA men Dec .

  • Davros

there’s alot of mischief with the DUP, its just better hidden that’s all..

I have more time for Sinn Féin than I have for the DUP spirit-level.

  • Dec

Davros indeed. The IRA offered to shoot the alleged murderers. The British Army promoted the convicted murderers.

  • spirit-level

    right on
my lastest phalanx prod into the DUP is that their policies are a betrayal of the young unionists who eagerly desire a real future with real politics working.
If we transcend the constitutional debate for a moment these “decent” young unionists have every right to demand that, as it is their land also which they were born into , and deserve much better from their leaders. So far no one has come back to me on that.. shocked perhaps! that I could be so thoughtful on their plight.

  • Davros

So you approve of capital punishment and extra-judicial capital punishment to boot ?
What’s the penalty for immigrants caught getting involved with the PSNI then Dec ?

  • Davros

unfortunately spirit-level there’s still a degree of mind-set that anything left of centre is “fenian”.
Mind you SF in the ROI seem to be following a path similar to that taken by the SDLP a couple of decades ago.

  • spirit-level

    yes
seems like I’m the one who’s having an orange afternoon after all 😉
I sincerely mean to reach out to unionists and persuade them their best interests lie not with the DUP, and that I’m on their side. Which I am.

  • spirit-level

“Mind you SF in the ROI seem to be following a path similar to that taken by the SDLP a couple of decades ago.”
sorry Davros I can’t debate with you more that kind of historical point, there’s many gaps for me. Have come into this whole norn iron thing late in the day as it were. Have to rely on energy, enthusiasm. Pick up lots here..Norn Iron is a Graveyard people stuck in Coffins. I’m Alive..

I lived in Brent East and while there is Irish there, there is not a hugh amount of them. The constituency may well revert to Labour. However its make up is extremely multi cultural with the Asians very much in the fore.

Justice particularly after the GFA, when so many murderers and psychopaths were let out of prison for horendous crimes, seems a hard thing to pin down here.

What has happened this woman as with the McCartneys is terrible. Sadly as with all those killed by those released under the GFA there does not seem that there is going to be any justice.

  • Young Fogey

    Current odds on Brent East:

    Labrokes
    LibDem 4/6
    Labour 11/10
    Tories 33/1
    200/1 Bar

    Paddy Power
    LibDem 8/13
    Labour 5/4
    Tories 20/1

    IG Index
    LibDems 0.7/1
    Labour 0.6/1

So the bookies are favouring a LibDem hold, the markets a Labour regain, and I went for a decko round the constituency last night and you’d hardly notice there was an election on.

  • Tom Griffin

I spoke to a Labour Party member the other day who seemed to think that the Lib Dems were ahead.
Simon Hoggart wrote a Guardian sketch on the constituency last week, which gives a good feel for the mood on the ground.

  • Gonzo

The Labour Party now appears to hold two contradictory positions on the McBride murder.

On one hand, we have Labour candidate Yasmin Quershi promising that she will help Kelly McBride in the campaign for her murdered brother – the aim of which is to get the convicted murderers kicked out of the Army.

And on the other hand, we have Labour MP and NIO Minister John Spellar, who was on the Army board that re-admitted the pair into the Army.

Who’s in breach of Labour policy then?

All this, despite the fact that the LibDems have given the McBride campaign support and assistance in the past couple of years…

  • Jimmy Sands

I think the “flagship Irish constituency” is overdone. IIRC the High Rd is actually the boundary, there are far larger ethnic groups in Brent and I doubt an issue like this would swing it.

  • Bloomsday Girl

Jimmy Sands – “Flagship Irish constituency’….. in that Brent East has one of the biggest concentrations of Irish in Britain not that the Irish are the biggest ethnic minority grouping there.

  • Young Fogey

That’s no surprise, Gonzo. Yamin Qureishi’s whole election campaign seems to be based on disagreeing with her own Party. The Qureishis are a big Labour family in Brent and moreso down here in Westminster where a couple of them are on the City Council. Not the worst in the world but they should really have the guts to do a Sedgemore.
