Ervine rounds on independent Kennedy

David Ervine rounded on Liam Kennedy, who is standing on a Human Rights platform in Gerry Adams’ West Belfast constituency, saying: “Liam Kennedy seems to be saying, in his professorial tones, David Ervine has ability but must try harder. That man does not have the ability to mark my work, because he wouldn`t know what I do in a day”. Slugger will be seeking a ringside seat at what looks like it could be a lively debate on Thursday.

increasingly I find the actions, utterances and positioning of independents of all political hues all over these islands rather annoying. many of them are pure me feiner of the tony gregory types, who get elected year afetr year based on their ability to “be independent”. this outing for kennedy os nothing more than an ego trip and in this case i am fully in agreement with ervine.

    Hensons

Liam may be many things but egotist is not one of them.

  • Concerned Loyalist

Although I don’t agree with David Ervine and the PUP’s pro-agreement stance, I do have to agree with him over this issue.

Loyalist politicians from the UPRG and PUP work tirelessly in the community to prevent young loyalists getting involved in interface violence. They regularly liase with their republican counterparts in order to try and combat this problem.

    Two questions;
1)Why is an “independent” from TIPPERARY standing in the West Belfast constituency anyway?

2)On Kennedy’s website he says he wants to challenge Ervine to clarify his position on “internal repression…within loyalist communities”………………………………..How many times do loyalist politicians like Ervine and Billy Hutchinson of the PUP or Tommy Kincaid and Frankie Gallagher from the UPRG have to come out and condemn these “punishment beatings” before people like Kennedy actually listen to what they are saying? They don’t agree with it and continually work to persuade the UVF and UDA respectively that these attacks are counter-productive and not the way to resolve anti-social behaviour!

  • Fraggle

Concerned Loyalist, Mr Kennedy is standing in the West Belfast constituency because he lives in Belfast and want to be elected? Is that hard to understand?

  • Jacko

    CL
    Who is Tommy Kincaid?
It doesn’t say much for your knowledge of the subject matter if you don’t even know the names of the people you cite as sterling examples of hard working community activists.

I think what Kennedy is saying is that talk is cheap, and is asking when all of these high sounding sentiments are going to translate into a reduction in attacks on the ground.

  • La Dolorosa

Enoch Powell (unfortunately) stood as MP for North Down so why can’t someone from Tipperary stand in West Belfast?

  • La Dolorosa

Enoch Powell (unfortunately) stood as MP for North Down so why can’t someone from Tipperary stand in West Belfast?

  • El Matador

Is Tommy Kincaid not the Glenavon manager?

Slugger’s a bit boring today. Not much craic/controversy/slagging

  • Concerned Loyalist

    Jacko,
Lol. Typo sorry. Tommy KINCAID is the Glenavon FC manager and former manager of Larne FC. I was on the Irish League Forums and football must have been on my mind.

Tommy KIRKHAM is the UPRG representative I name-checked as a force of good in loyalist communities.

  • El Matador

Enoch Powell (unfortunately) stood as MP for North Down

He was actually MP for south Down, before being overthrown by the great Eduardo McGrady. Where were Spin Féin then when the nationalist voters needed them?

Why is an “independent” from TIPPERARY standing in the West Belfast constituency anyway?

Sure Jim Wells lives in Lurgan and is south Down MLA, and Ruane is south Down MLA but lives in Louth. Pat Doherty lives in Donegal, but is ‘MP’ in West Tyrone.

Don’t think Mr. Kennedy is doing anything new here

  • Concerned Loyalist

Correct El Matadoe, that is indeed who Tommy Kincaid is

  • Concerned Loyalist

I just wish politicians would stand in their own areas, that’s all.
I live in the East Londonderry constituency and that is where I would stand for election if I was to become a politician after I get my degree, as I understand what matters to the people in that area, whereas I wouldn’t have the same knowledge of say South Down or West Belfast.

  • La Dolorosa

Concerned Loyalis – Surely the most important thing is if you live in the area and know/understand the specfic issues/problems etc. Country of origin is irrelevant.

  • Fraggle

Concerned Loyalist I take it you’ll not be supporting your DUP candidate on the grounds that the lives in the city and not up in his westminster constituency.

As it says on his website, this guy has been living in Belfast since the 70’s so he probably does have ‘knowledge’ of the area.

Could it be that you just don’t want southerners living in Norn Iron? Just a thought.

  • Concerned Loyalist

    Fraggle,
I hope you’re not inferring that I’m either xenophobic or sectarian, as I don’t care where people decide to live, as that is a matter for them. If they happen to move up here from the South then so be it!

I was merely making the point that Liam Kennedy is wrong in his inference that Davy Ervine and other loyalist politicians aren’t working hard enough to eradicate human rights abuses such as punishment shootings and beatings.

  • Concerned Loyalist

I will be voting for our DUP candidate, Gregory Campbell, but have to admit that I am a little annoyed that he is standing for council election in the Londonderry, and not in Coleraine. But I suppose it goes back to my point. He probably feels that he would be best equipped representing his local Waterside neighbours of Londonderry, at council level.

As for where he lives, it’s the same county as I, but just happens to reside over the boundary, in the Foyle constituency.

I think it’s a little different than the cases of Kennedy in W.Belfast and Ruane in S.Down!

  • la Dolorosa

CL – it would be a shame to let rigidness of residence prevent a competent politican from representing people.

  • George

    Concerned Loyalist,
I suppose Carson should have stayed in his native Dublin so rather than canvassing in Ulster.

  • Fraggle

Concerned Loyalist, your arguments are all over the place.

“1)Why is an “independent” from TIPPERARY standing in the West Belfast constituency anyway?”

    then

“I was merely making the point that Liam Kennedy is wrong in his inference that Davy Ervine and other loyalist politicians aren’t working hard enough to eradicate human rights abuses such as punishment shootings and beatings.”

now tell me, what has being from Tipparary got to do with his inferences about loyalists?

Kennedy is involved in the West Belfast Phoenix Development Trust and, as it says on his nice website, he has lived in Belfast for decades.

As for Doherty and Ruane, they also reside just over the boundary from the constituencies they are contesting. It is a little different, as you say, but only a little. Kennedy lives in the same city and county as the constituency he is contesting.

  • A.U.

Concerned Loyalist, I removed your post because without Jacko’s post , which I removed for man-playing, it made no sense.
