Political Compass rides again…

The Political Compass has been set up for the UK election. Unfortunately that will probably tell you next to nothing about who you should vote for in NI, but it’s probably good fun. I tried the main one again, and have discovered in my third attempt over about four years I’m still a strong social libertarian, but I’m rapidly becoming left of centre in economic terms. Rebecca, who reminded me of it, thought I’d be classed down with Hitler and Stalin. Maybe I should review my management style!!

What exactly does clicking Agree to Our race has many superior qualities, compared with other races. mean?
There should be an option to append “but each race has it’s superior qualities”. I don’t want to be classed as racist because I’ve noticed that Africans are quite good at long distance running.

  • Occasional Commenter

And then there’s Controlling inflation is more important than controlling unemployment.
Surely the consensus now is that the only way to keep unemployment down in the long term is to keep inflation down! What do I select?

  • Circles

OC – Never mind what – where is it?

  • barney

I seem to be somewhere between Nelson Mandella and the Dalai Lama. Which would suggest they are psycho provo appologists, according to some around here.

Circles, it’s the 4th question on the first page.

    I’m Economic Left/Right: 0.13 and
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.72 . I used to be further to the right economically (and would still think of myself as such), but was always libertarian.
FYI, I agreed to the race statement “Our race has many superior qualities, compared with other races

  • beano @ Everything Ulster

I expected to come out further right – ffs they have me WELL left of the Lib Dems!

Is it disturbing that as a “protestant atheist” that the closest person to me on their chart was the JP II? lol

  • Donnie

    Economic Left/Right: -4.63
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.26

Hmmm I did a similar compass a few weeks ago in The Times and I was broadly centrist with right-wing tendencies. I feel The Times compass was a more accurate reflection of me than this one which puts me nearer to Gandhi than Maggie!

  • beano @ Everything Ulster

Sorry for posting so many different comments on here but has anyone else noticed that in their chart the most communist ones are the ones from poor countries? Mugabe, Hussein, Mandela, Arafat…

  • Circles

Is that a nurture or nurture issue beano?

I’m on a line with Gandhi – who apparently was also an irish republican as barney so helpfully pointed out.

Any difference with unionist posters, or are we all lefty, libertarians?

Has anyone found themselves approaching Hitler and Thatcher yet? Maybe you just don’t want to admit it,

  • Henry94

I’m almost in the middle. But I find I’m slightly more to the right every time I do this thing. I’ll have to keep an eye on myself.

  • Occasional Commenter

Why are there are no right wing libertarians in that graph of famous people? Wouldn’t the old Liberal Party have been in there?

  • fair_deal

I’m almost dead centre of the graph. Me a centrist, I’m must tell my ex-party colleagues in the UUP that one.

  • PS

    Economic Left/Right: -6.50
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.51

I think I’ve veered more towards the left since i last did this.

  • queens_unionist

    Economic Left/Right: 3.50
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 5.13

oops double post. im not too surprised with my result

QU – that must put you up there with Maggie!
Fair play to you for posting that!

  • Keith M

    Economic Left/Right : 1.75
    Social Libertarian / Authoritarian : -2.26

Quite centrist and about average for a PD supporter.

  • queens_unionist

“QU – that must put you up there with Maggie!”

and this is a bad thing.

I found some of the questions quite laeding though and some of them werent very balanced.
no matter what response i gave in a few it could have been taken in a wrong way.
So maybe a little harsher than i expected but not too much i like where im at! 🙂

Also @ beano how can you be a “protestant atheist”? :p

  • El Matador

    Economic Left/Right: -3.38
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.13

    Latter day Gandhi?

At least I know I support the right party 😉

  • PS

You’ve left the SDLP then El ;)?

  • Chris Gaskin

The same place as Mandela, I ‘m happy with that

  • Gum

A great site, Im bang in the bottom left corner. I think the questions are slightly leaning though – which is why some of us are further to the left than we’d have thought. Anyway, a great site for a laugh and a debate!

  • Amicus

I’m the polar opposite to Dubyua, which pleases me!

  • Young Irelander

    OC,

The race issue is a trick question. “Races” don’t actually exist.

  • Stalford

    Economic Left/Right = +8.50
    Liberterian/Authoritarian = +4.50

On the same ground as Geirge Bush/John Howard/Maggie Thatcher – a good place to be!

  • Chris Gaskin

    Stalford

I just saw your posters last night while out canvassing.

Is there a reason why your party doesn’t have pictures of the Council candidates on their posters?

  • Stalford

With a mug like mine I’d lose votes!!!

  • Chris Gaskin

“With a mug like mine I’d lose votes!!!”

    LOL

Don’t worry Christopher when you get elected I intend to send all my problems in your direction, seeing as you will be my local councilor 😉

  • Stalford

    Oh dear G_d!

  • Chris Gaskin

    “Oh dear G_d!”

    LOL, Oh yes!!!

with great power comes great responsibility 😉

  • Stalford

    LOL!

Go to Maskey! He’s the friend of anti-social layabout student-types like you!

  • Davros

    ROFL – Slugger at it’s best 🙂

Well done the Two Christophers …. now there’s a thought! Fancy a career on TV ? You two could be a cross between the two Ronnies and Saint and Greavsie ! ( No Richard and Judy cracks from me , no sir! )

    p.s.

Don’t worry Christopher when you get elected

Sounds like you’ll be getting cg’s vote here cs!

  • Stalford

    Davros

    “The Odd Couple”?

    HA HA!

Well, Mr. Gaskin has to transfer his number 2 – given he hasn’t a second Shinner to vote for (don’t mention Derdrie – she won’t play well around BT9) he may as well transfer to me!

All votes are very much appreciated!

  • Stalford

    ROFL?

  • Chris Gaskin

    “Go to Maskey!”

Of course I will, but I honestly intend to go to you to see will you be a councilor for all the voters and not just the ones that voted for you

Expect my call come 10th May

    Testing times ahead Christopher 😉

“He’s the friend of anti-social layabout student-types like you!”

    LOL

I resent that comment; I’m a very productive member of society 😉

Let’s not forget that you were an “anti-social layabout student-type” up until last year

  • Stalford

While I attended Queens and completed my degree there, I don’t think I could ever have been accused of being a “student” in the classical sense of the word!

    🙂

  • Davros

ROFL – Geek/Nerd abbreviation for Rolls On Floor Laughing

  • Chris Gaskin

“Sounds like you’ll be getting cg’s vote here cs!”

    Davros

What exactly have you been smoking? 😉

“Well done the Two Christophers …. now there’s a thought!”

Only my mother calls me Christopher 😉

“You two could be a cross between the two Ronnies and Saint and Greavsie !”

    LOL

It wouldn’t work out; the temptation to slap him after one of his trademark drool remarks would become unbearable 😉

    “The Odd Couple”?

    The very odd couple

“Well, Mr. Gaskin has to transfer his number 2”

And I will be, a number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and all of these transfers will be to Sinn Féin candidates.

It will be fun when Slieve Gullion returns 5 out of 5 Sinn Féin councilors and then Sinn Féin will have overall control of Newry and Mourne council.

  • Chris Gaskin

“I don’t think I could ever have been accused of being a “student” in the classical sense of the word!”

I would have to concur; I think it was the tweed suits and multi-color tops you wore that swung it 😉

  • Stalford

5 out of 5? That’s hardly likely. 4 out of 5 is the more likely outcome.

    Trademark remarks? How dare you!

  • Stalford

Just because I referred to your lot as the “great unwashed” at hustings don’t be takin’ a huff!

  • Chris Gaskin

“5 out of 5? That’s hardly likely. 4 out of 5 is the more likely outcome”

Care to place a wager on that Christopher?

5 out of 5 it will be

    “Trademark remarks? How dare you!”

    You know it’s true

“Just because I referred to your lot as the “great unwashed” at hustings don’t be takin’ a huff!”

I heard you call me a lot of things at hustings but I never heard you call me or my comrades the “great unwashed”, or do I just think they are my comrades 😉

  • Davros

    “great unwashed”

Laundering cuts both ways these days 😉
