UUP get lesson in flags…

WITH Bob McCartney quitting North Down, are the Ulster Unionists starting to show signs of distress in North Down? Well, their Union flag is upside down on their website, notes Tim Grant on ATW. “Could be an omen,” ponders Tim.

If Lady Sylvia would like to learn how to avoid such an embarrassing social faux pas again, she should click to this handy guide by Woodlands Junior School (by geography students between the ages of seven and 11 years) that I googled.

The pupils helpfully inform us:

To deliberately fly the flag upside down is a signal indicating a situation of ‘DISTRESS’. It is also “lese Majeste” (which means: insulting the Crown), and is theoretically still a crime in the UK and its commonwealth!

Who’da thunk it?

The same thing happened when Prince Charles on his first visit to Dublin when a whopping crowd of 30 smiling pensioners were on hand to welcome Ireland’s favourite British monarch.

It was politely pointed out by the Prince’s entourage and the flag was promptly lowered and rehoisted correctly.

How can you tell and who looks out for that sort of thing? I seem to recall big Ian complaining about the same thing in Brussels but the difference between ‘up’ and ‘down’ must be very small indeed.

You obviously didn’t click the last link. Tut.

  • Tim Grant

Simple, St Patrick’s Cross, left side is lower, right is upper.

  • Keith M

If the union flag is too complicated for the UUP, can I suggest something a little simpler and more appropriate for them; a plain white flag.

Jesus that website’s so full of holes it hurts my eyes. The flag’s upside down, at least one of the links on the home page doesn’t work and the news stories have major grammatical problems. I hope they take their campaigning a bit more seriously than this!

  • beano @ Everything Ulster

Just found out as well when you try to contact them your mail gets bounced!

  • Traditional Unionist

Was it Jim Allisters posters that had the flag upside down?

  • headmelter

    Well now i feel enlightened.
The school web site also lists dates when the apron should be flown.
It never seems to get a rest in the six counties.

  • barney

Oops! The school website tells all. Fascinating. Absolutely fas…zzz

  • jimmyquickswipe

Sorry to dissappoint you but it doesn’t state it’s NOT flown any other day, just ensure it’s flown those particular days.

I’m sure Lady Sylvia will get one of the domestic staff to sort out the little problems quick sticks – just as soon as they get the Airdales washed!
