Trimble: IRA to make statement within days

Daivd Trimble seems convinced that the IRA is going to follow up Gerry Adams’ plea for it follow a single political path, with a detailed response in the next few days. Though this seems somewhat at odds with Adams’ own statement in Derry yesterday.

    P.S
Is Sammy Wilson on Drugs? Did anyone notice that stare of his- his eyes never moved while he rattled on with his usual bigotry.

  • Mick

    ‘kitty’:

You first comment stands as fair comment. The second I’ve removed as a personal (and uninformative) attack on a public figure. You are by no means the worst offender!

    All:

It seems to have been accepted recently that if I don’t go in and tackle individuals on playing the man rather than the ball, then people are free to assert that someone who’s views they disagree with is a ‘bigot’, a ‘west brit’ or a ‘provo’.

It’s especially fatuous when the accuser doesn’t even know the person concerned! More importantly, it is no kind of argument!

I understand that things get heated and people sometimes overreact. But at best playing the man is a frank admission you don’t have a counter argument. I appeal to all of you who’ve inadvertently (or otherwise) found yourself straying over the line: have a second look at your post, before you post it! Otherwise you’re likely to sell yourself short.

So please, please: strip out the invective and hit your opponent with a cogent argument, not meaningess graffitti!!

Mick, you should shoot the offenders with your finger-guns from your “happier” picture.

BTW, am I alone in thinking Mick’s picture doesn’t look at all happy? In fact, you look more annoyed than ever…

Sinn Fein were playing down expectations of anything happening before negotiations, right up until the election was called, when we promptly had the Adams statement.
Is it possible that they are doing the same thing again, holding back until say, the last week of the campaign?

Mick, I think you pulled off the wrong one. I was talking about the DUP party political broadcast- in the first one and took the swipe at wee Sammy and his gaze in the second one. Hey wee Sammy, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to infer you are on the hard stuff up Sandy Row. Thanks for keeping your clothes on for the broadcast. Where was the Big Fella in the broadcast? I missed him terribly, and I am inconsolable that Ian is being kept out of the picture. Can anyone explain.

“I understand that things get heated and people sometimes overreact. But at best playing the man is a frank admission you don’t have a counter argument. Well Mick me boy I am glad you have taken note of all these wee skitters haranguing me but don’t worry I’ll keep me hat on. Good luck to you and I hope these boys don’t be playing the man too much and leave that to us lovely ladies to do:)

    ‘west brit’

    Mick

I have a feeling that I may have used that term but that’s just another name for Dublin 4 mentality which the same person represents.

ergo, I don’t find that playing the Man and not ball.

If you do I apologise and will not use that term, on this site anyway 😉

Oh dear – big gamble by Dave-boy. If nowt comes out he’ll have a wee bit of eggy poo on his red little face.
Personally I’d love to see a reaction sooner rather than later – but it’ll depend on to what degree a sounding of the grass roots has already taken place. If a longer wait means a better sounding out of IRA volunteers (and minimising the numbers – probably from the perks brigade – defecting to the yahoos) then I’m all for it.

  • fair_deal

Trimble’s speech reads like a speech prepared immediately after Adams’ speech but was overtaken by events (or no one at the UUP noticed the need to adapt it).

Also his predictive abilities on republicanism are dodgy. He predicted the IRA was not going to call a new cessation three days before they renewed the ‘military cessation’.

  • Mick

JD, it might be the beard. If we hit the target – it may have to go. Can’t have people thinking I’m in a permanent huff! 🙂

Chris, I’m not averse to the use of any word. As long as it’s part of an argument, and not a stand in for an argument.

I’ve just seen the UUP ad in our local paper -“Decent people… vote Ulster Unionists (sic)”

So I have to offer a humble apology to Basil Mccrea for blaming him for tarring the majority of Unionists as indecent, since they have the temerity (by 2 to 1 last time) not to be “decent”.
No, Basil may be our big hope for comedy from this election, but all he was guilty of on this occasion was to follow orders.

So what’s the line for next week’s ad?
“People with nice houses vote Ulster Unionists”
“People who went to grammar school vote Ulster Unionists”
Or the undeniably true “People who don’t vote, vote Ulster Unionists” ( hence explaining all those “traditional seats” which mysteriously don’t have UUP MPs)

I never thought I’d say this, but bring back “Simply British”

  • Davros

“People with nice houses vote Ulster Unionists”

Isn’t that copyrighted by APNI ? ( sorry Ian! )

Still think Tom’s likely to be closer. The most dramatic impact on SF’s electoral success would be an announcement a few days before the election date, and I am of little doubt that we shall hear something around that time. Gerry has already said as much as it won’t be any time soon, and he should know.

  • davidbrew

Nah- they’re too right wing to be “decent”
