Don't hold your breath?

Worth noting before it slips any further off the BBC main headlines. Speaking today at the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, regarding his speech last week, Gerry Adams said “others have said there must be an answer within weeks, I have to say that in my opinion, it is not likely that the IRA’s process can conclude as hastily as that.” So, reading between the lines, aren’t we always, don’t expect an IRA response before the election? And why would there be? After all, there are plenty of commentators already examining that supposed silver lining on Adams’ behalf. Any further information would only encourage a comparison to the last nag that was put up for sale

Again Gerry Adams is damned if he does and damned if he doesnt, if they delivered an answer before May 5th he would be accused of electioneering….the fact that this is being discussed suggests an answer after the election, so whats wrong with that? Do you think people will forget the question? Furthermore despite what you sceptics think -this will have to be discussed at a grass-roots level in the RA, if it was simply a fiat like pronouncement from the Army Council, I have little doubt that this would spawn a drift of personnel and hardware over to the dissidents, and who would want that to happen? No its better for them to thrash it out and then come up hopefully with the answer we all want. Incidentally I am picking up vibes that this is meeting some resistance at grass roots level, which suggests that its outcome is not a foregone conclusion, it is after all, in republican terms (whether you like republicanism or not) a pretty massive step with no tangible quid pro quo likely from the well tooled up loyalist paramilitaries WHO HAVE NOT DECOMMISSIONED A SINGLE THING AND REMAIN APPARENTLY IMMUNE FROM SCRUTINY THROUGHOUT ALL THIS!

    Levitas,

The timing of the verbal or written reply from the IRA is no longer crucial, as far as I can observe. All of the other parties, including the USA, have said that they will await IRA action regardless of the words.

  • TAFKABO

It may have escaped your notice, but not only did Loyalists begin the decomissioning process, but they did so in public, and for all we know, up to this point they have exceeded the IRA in the amount of materiel disposed off.

  • Levitas

TAFKABO so they are disarmed now then are they? I think you will find that armed loyalism remains armed to the teeth.

  • Davros

TAFKABO so they are disarmed now then are they?

Resorting to setting up straw men now Levitas ?
He never claimed that they were disarmed.

    Alan

In terms of the election here, the timing of any IRA statement or action is crucial, for the reasons I’ve outlined above. In terms of the USA, well.. arguably, Adams’ initial speech was also designed to deflect the recent criticism from that quarter during this election campaign.

TAFKABO said “begin the decomissioning process, but they did so in public, and for all we know, up to this point they have exceeded the IRA in the amount of materiel disposed off”

I did not intend that to be a straw man style comment-I’m merely trying to draw out TAFKABO on what he bases the assertion that loyalist disarming has hitherto “exceeded” that of the IRA……the absence of a reply suggests what I suspected, namely that it was such a flimsily based assertion that it could be said to have arrived newly born,as straw like as dear old worzel gummidge himself…
