Catholic church leaders devoid of political savvy?

Malachi O’Doherty bursts a long lived conspiracy theory, once beloved of many certainly of an older time DUP: that the Roman Catholic church was at the base an agitator for anti state politics. He argues that there is little public sign of political nous shown in the statements of the church’s leading representatives.

    Opus dei ?

  • Henry94

But Malachi that’s just what they want you to think.

  • john

    Poor old Mal

    No one loves him

Apart from senior army officers, ulster Unionists and ruc inspecters

Too much time on your hands,my friend

  • David

The vast papist conspiracy theory seems to be very much out of fashion these days, even in DUP circles.

  • Gonzo

Any opinion on the actual article john?

  • john

It’s difficult to form an objective opinion on Malachi’s article, he fails to really grasp the subject matter and tends to ramble between what he believes to be protestant perceptions of the Catholic church and Gerry Adams being some kind of Jesuit 007.
While there is obviously a tongue and cheek nature to the piece,it just leaves me devoid of any thought provoking moments and i’m left feeling ” Good topic-poorly addressed “

    Sorry

    David

Don’t write off the vast papal conspiracy just yet. John Taylor thinks the “catholic countries” are conspiring to keep Turkey out of the EU.

  • Biffo

    Sorry

    The “Roman Catholic countries”.

  • PaddyCanuck

I thought Greece was the main opponent to Turkish entry… As far as I know greece is not a catholic country.

  • Biffo

Stop quibbling, it’s another bible hating country.

  • Malachi

John, did you really not recognise that the bit about Gerry Adams is a joke?

  • DXI

Well Gonzo,it is a pretty lightweight article. (Yes,I know you didn’t ask me . Bit of stating of the bleedin’ obvious.

As a resident of Free Ireland I am amazed and somewhat disbelieving that certain Protestants in the Occupied Territory actually believe the stuff about Vatican influence.

I mean they had the loyalty of 80% of the South 30 years ago and managed to blow it!

  • PaddyCanuck

    Malachi,

I am always left with the feeling that; “this guy is having a larf”, after reading one of your articles. Are my feelings correct, or are you usually trying to make some seriuos point or other in your republican/fenian hating articles?

  • Biffo

    Paddy Canuck

In John Taylor’s opinion, it’s the EU catholic countries that are setting up the obstacles.

He was discussing the topic on Radio Ulster with an English commentator who just didn’t catch on. But Taylor felt compelled to repeat it a few times just in case the listeners out in ulsterland didn’t realise we’ve got a major international catholic conspiracy in progress.

It was just an instance of traditional Ulster Protestant bullsh*t that you don’t hear so often anymore. But you do still hear it from time to time.

  • DXI

I see my handle has turned red…and what is with this security number thing? Wasn’t here last time I was. Sorry. Deviation. Shoot me.

  • DXI

I though it was the Dutch who were most anti-Turkish of all the EU states. They are Orangemen aren’t they?

  • john

    Yes Mal

That’s why i said ‘tongue and cheek’

Although ‘joke’ is maybe an overstatement

  • Biffo

    Malachi

“There are, no doubt, some paranoid Protestants who imagine that Gerry Adams receives his instructions on a coded microdot imbedded in the eucharist wafer he takes on his tongue”

Are you telling me that’s a joke? Maybe you haven’t read Ten Men Dead?

  • Davros

The worry at the time of the crisis was that Home Rule would mean Rome Rule. Did events in the Free State bear this out ? On balance, yes.

  • DXI

Hiya Davros. Rust never sleeps eh? To which ‘crisis’ do you refer?

  • Davros

“To which ‘crisis’ do you refer?”

Oddly enough I was referring to what has been called the ‘Home Rule Crisis’ DXI.

  • Chris Gaskin

The Catholic Church should never be allowed to speak on Irish political affairs, all they do is fuck things up.

I am with the Fenians on this, the clergy have no place in politics.

  • franc

    Language,Language.

  • DXI

    Davos.

That was a while back wasn’t it? Nothing odd about your reference. But you guys in Occupied Territory are really stuck in the past.

The Roman Church has even less influence on sensible people days than, for example, you have.

  • DXI

Erratums: DavRos. And The Roman Church has even less influence on sensible people THESE days than, for example, you have.

    Language indeed.

  • Chris Gaskin

    Sorry Franc

Sometimes however only that word will do.

  • Davros

Difficult to look at history without dipping into the past.

  • DXI

Are we talking history? I thought it was “Are RCC leaders devoid of savvy?” I prefer polls where you can click on a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ button to a specific question. Provides focus.

Anyway Davros you should try looking ahead. The view is even foggier but at least that is where we going.

  • Davros

    Are we talking history?

I was – and there’s a historical element both in Mick’s blog and the Belfast Telegraph article. I have no idea what you are talking about 😉
