Gorbachev on John Paul II

Fascinating interveiw with the last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev as he recalls the role of the late Pope in the breaking up of the former Eastern Bloc.

I think we need to be careful here. It was actually the USA and their hugh expenditure on defence which crippled the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union could not keep up. The war in Afghanistan was also a strategic mistake. Also Gorbachevs Perestroka led to the first cracks in the Soviet dictatorship. A dictatorship cannot liberalise and hope to survive.

While it may suit the Catholic Church to show the Pope as a liberal this was far from the truth.John Paul the second has left the church in a conservative quadmire. Old White conservative men rule the roost. Paedophilia is ignored.Homosexuality is cast as evil. No sex controls has allowed millions in Africa to succumb to Aids. The ordinance of women is ignored. The trappings in Rome for his funeral were sickening. With all the poverty in the world how much did it cost to stage manage that funeral?.

Instead of repeating cliches maybe you would explain why the aids crisis is worst in countries where the Catholic population is smallest.

Why, if condoms are the answer, are the infection rates so high in countries like Swaziland, Botswana and South Africa which are awash with condoms and have few Catholics.

“Why, if condoms are the answer, are the infection rates so high in countries like Swaziland, Botswana and South Africa which are awash with condoms and have few Catholics.”

Ever heard of a syllogistic fallacy?

The absence of catholicism doesn’t mean the presence of condoms.

  • Syllogism

Neither, then, can the presence of catholics mean the absence of condoms.

However, the absence of catholicism would mean the absence of catholic doctrine as a justificable reason for the non-use of said condoms.

And so if ‘catholicism’ is not the reason for their low use in non-catholic countries, why assume it is the reason in catholic ones?

This whole catholic church/condoms/aids thing is absolute rubbish. If people listened to the catholic church and didn’t have sex before or outside of marraige then they wouldn’t have a problem. If they don’t listen to the catholic church about sex then why would they listen to them about condoms.
Quite simply this whole issue is nothing more than the chance to have a dig at the catholic church … nothing more than that!

    Anyway we’re digressing…
