Hearts and Minds kicks off the election coverage

Hearts and Minds tonight features the first in a series with the political party leaders: “tonight it’s the turn of David Trimble. How is he hoping to bring back the glory days for Ulster Unionism? Also the Alliance’s David Ford on the need for real political leadership”.

Saw the program last night, even though it was delayed by feckin’ golf.

Trimble came off not too bad, although was it just me or was he a smidgen more aggressive than the Davy of previous campaigns?

That said, he looked like he sincerely believed he the UU were going to do well in May (I suppose he has to) – if I hadn’t spent altogether too much time on here in recent months I’d have believed him myself!

I didn’t particularly rate DT’s performance. Although the line of questioning always had him on the back foot “Your party is screwed this time isn’t it?” so he was always denying this before he could shift on to something positive.

I do wish someone would tell him to get his fecking hair cut.

On the offices it was the Lurgan office that he closed recently.

Trimble struck me as resigned to his fate, but putting as brave a face on it as possible.

Ford on the other hand did very well in my opinion.

    Big Ian next week!!

  • Dessertspoon

Isn’t that a bit risky letting him out alone! Any bets on a sudden but brief illness which will mean Robinson (Peter) or Dodds will have to do the interview???

Dessertspoon( do you mind if i call you spoon for short)

For your information the last time these interrviews where done in the run up to an election, Big ian carried it out himself without any difficulties.

  • PS

I thought one of the features of the last campaign was a noitceably lesser media role played by Dr. Paisley? Did he himself not say himself that he was focusing on meeting the people on the ground?

He rejected Trimble’s challenge of a head to head debate and didn’t partake in the debates organised by the Politics Show.

  • GavBelfast

Noel Thompson pointedly said that Paisley had been “invited” to take part in next week’s programme.

He didn’t say Big Ian had accepted the invitation.

  • IJP

Ford on the other hand did very well in my opinion.

Thought it’d be rude to say that first, but yes, he did do very well!

Mind, I must say I’ve never seen Noel conduct such poor interviews. He’s usually as good as any in any BBC region.

    PS,

    isn’t this subject regarding hearts & minds…..

    Indeed:
“For your information the last time these interrviews where done in the run up to an election, Big ian carried it out himself without any difficulties.”

You dragged the conversation back to “last time”, PS was merely using other incidents during “last time” to support a view that Big Ian might not want to appear next week on H+Ms.

Sadly I think dessertspoon may be right and we will have to suffer robbo or dodds.
But it would be nice to see papa doc appear as i’m in need of a good giggle.

  • Dessertspoon

Call me “Spoon”, call me “Dessert”. I don’t mind.
