Unionist web wars hot up…

IT’S childish, but it’ll probably be one of the few laughs the Ulster Unionists will get this year at the expense of the DUP. Check out the website address on the link after you click. Jim Allister doesn’t sound best pleased.

Perhaps a slight confusion over .com`s and .co.uk`s has ensued?
    It might also be illegal:-

    itunes.co.uk

says jimallister.com on the side of his building all the same!

  • Alan2

That`s what I mean. A bit of misunderstanding between his office and the computer firm has resulted in the .co.uk URL being registered instead of .com.

  • Alan2

jimallister.net and jimallister.org were also registered by MCC Computers on 30th March

  • Bob Wilson

Very funny – but an expensive joke surely to register 3 names?

  • Rebecca_Black

Alls fair in love and politics!!

  • Alan2

Sorry a bit confused. I was thinking these were registered last month..it was only yesterday. the jimallister.com URL was registered on the 24th March.

  • Alan2

    Domain Name:
    uup.org.uk

    Registrant:
Imperial Tories (Not affiliated to the UUP)

interesting…as it redirects to the UUP site.

  • Dessertspoon

It really doesn’t cost that much to register lots and lots of domain names in fact it’s probably a good idea to get as many as you can and use redirects to your main domain and site.

    Funny though!

  • Alan2

You can register domain names for as little a £1.50.
I don`t suppose the UUP will keep the name but Jim would have a case of going to Nominet the UK registrar as “cybersquatting” or the impersonation of another company often results in the domain name being removed from the original purchaser and given to the claimant..sometimes unfairly in my opinion.

itunes.co.uk was registered in 2000 long before itunes.com or the itunes download service were in operation yet Nominate has removed the itunes.co.uk domain from the owner and awarded it to Apple Inc the owners of the iPod and iTunes because of the simple fact that Apple offered him £5000 (or similar) and he held out for more and asked for £50,000 (or similar).

fair play to the Young Unionists. Not for them this nonsense of pretend Unionist unity for the good of the cause which their po faced elders are increasingly ill at ease in spouting. No, it’s good old fashioned juvenile behaviour, which we all enjoyed at University. I still smile at the time we presidedd over the election of half of the Rangers FC players on to Queen’s Student Union committees in the 1980s to demonstrate how infrequently they met.

Scary thing is, this silly little stunt is about the only proactive and imaginative thing the UUP has done since 1998, and it’s going to look rather silly as the party’s main political achievement in its centenary year.

At least it won’t be the funniest thing they do in 2005- let’s wait for the manifesto-“Tough on the DUP, Tough on the causes of the DUP”!

And for serious students of comedy, Dermot Nesbitt has been shoehorned back into South Down to explain why he tried to chicken run to Strangford to a bemused UUP electorate

  • George

Same thing happened to Bertie Ahern when Bertieahern.com was used as porn site.

Wonder if that says anything about the situation in the two jurisdictions.

  • fair_deal

“Wonder if that says anything about the situation in the two jurisdictions.”

Not really simply that the internet is global.

  • fun

Well he was slow to open his office, slow to register a domain name – bit slow all round

although as a QC (now didnt we hear that enough during the election) he will know that getting the name back will be no problem

  • PS

I still smile at the time we presidedd over the election of half of the Rangers FC players on to Queen’s Student Union committees in the 1980s to demonstrate how infrequently they met.

    David

Did the “players” in question not have to be members of the Council before they could be elected onto committees?

  • davidbrew

well , since the whole point of the exercise was to show how poorly run the SU was run, with committee posts for cronies, and committees never meeting, we sort of thought that electing the members of the Rangers championship winning team might wake up a few of the less dozy Shinners- but it didn’t, until we told Gown

BTW, I wonder if Queen’s Unionist Students still refer to a little guide explaining the best ways to disrupt and harass the union clique? Modesty forbids me identifying the author, but he was a terribly nice chap, who went into law, as I recall, where he didn’t do so well. :0)

Does Stalford not work for Jim Allister?

I thought that, if he did work for Allister, he may have wished to attack the YUs purile efforts and defend the future leader of the DUP.

Anyway, I found this story funny, as I suspect the journalists did judging by the way they were written. Allister did not sound best pleased with the company he hired, and it may be fair to infer that this joke may have caused him some pain.

  • Will

I would imagine Jim Allister wasnt too happy with whatever company he hired to set up the site – after all, wouldnt it have been their job to buy the domain name?

Its an interesting little story, but it doesnt even make it to the level of one day wonder.

I think Mick sums it up quite well when this story could be the biggest coup the UUP score all year!

  • Alan

Well he was slow to open his office, slow to register a domain name – bit slow all round

ahh…so where`s Mr Nicholson`s and Babre De Brun`s office? They must be coming later?

    “future leader of the DUP”

Hmm…I doubt that. Not impossible I suppose but it will probably be Robinson.

  • yerman

‘Slow to open an office etc etc.’

Maybe that particular building is being opened, but he obviously hasnt been hanging around in terms of work.

Just go back and compare the press coverage he’s had from his work and statements to either Jim Nicholson or Babs deBrun. I think everyone can tell from that who is the better MEP.

  • Stalford

I am pleased to report that Jim Allister will have the last laugh!

  • Mick

That sounds very definate Chris! Planning some cybersquatting of your own, or is that just a hint at your prediction of the election?

  • Rebecca Black

How exactly christopher, is he going to paint over the website address on his office?

  • Stalford

    Rebecca

I’m sure I won’t be despatched up a ladder with a can of paint, it aint in the job description!

  • Patrick Toal

The YU’s dont seem to have control of the jimallister.com page any longer. A counter-attack?

  • crat

    Yerman,

‘Just go back and compare the press coverage he’s had from his work and statements to either Jim Nicholson or Babs deBrun. ‘

Just did a google news search for Jim Allister DUP, Bairbre de Brun Sinn Fein and Jim Nicholson UUP. de Brun wins the online coverage by a mile.

  • Jimmy

I thought the YU’s had control of the site jimallister.com- I doubt their control has come and gone- suppose that is how best to sum up the UUP in general!!!

  • Rebecca Black

“Just did a google news search for Jim Allister DUP, Bairbre de Brun Sinn Fein and Jim Nicholson UUP. de Brun wins the online coverage by a mile. “

er, yeah but considering what party she is from, thats hardly surprising. Was the coverage all to do with european business but was it to do with SFs extra curricular activities?

  • Alan

Now, with typekey, you could depend on posters being who they claimed to be, but not, it appears, with this new system.

  • Alan2

Sorry just to clarify. A coupae of the “alan” posts were mine – obviously typing to quickly for my own good.

  • Alan2

The URL has had a registrar lock placed on it so like I said it will probably be turned over to Mr Allister as it would be considered abuse or infingement or whatever to buy a domain to “squat” in it.

  • Paisleyite

    crat

“deBrun wins on-line coverage by a mile”

Six years as an MLA and two as a government minister might have something to do with it! If your starting point was May 2004, Allister wins hands down!

  • davidbrew

and Jim Nicholson probably thinks the internet is something you catch fidh with

  • interested

“and Jim Nicholson probably thinks the internet is something you catch fidh with”

Can you get broadband in a caravan???
