Single issue candidates can be successful

According to this report on the BBC, the SDLP are considering standing aside in the West Tyrone contest for Westminster to give the Independent candidate Kieran Deeny a clearer run against the “absentee MP”, Sinn Féin’s Pat Doherty. As another successful single issue candidate stated recently – “As soon as voters realise that a vote for the independent candidate is not a wasted vote they will flock to the cause – if only to register their frustration with the current political scene.” – one thing’s certain, there is plenty of frustration with the current political scene here.

We are reader supported. Donate to keep Slugger lit!

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported.
