Sinn Fein reject motion on McCartney killing

The BBC leads with last night’s decision in Belfast City Council by Sinn Fein to dissent from a call for witnesses to go to the PSNI. Despite Sinn Fein’s public announcements giving people ‘permission’ to go to the police, no witnesses have as yet come forward.

SF’s ammendment urging that people take information to whoever they felt comfortable with was also rejected. Oddly enough, both Hugh Orde and the McCartney family have no trouble with SF’s approach. Could it be that the SDLP were trying to score a political point instead of seeking justice for the McCartneys?

I believe that Sinn Féin was right not to support the SDLP motion in Belfast City Council last night. This belief is based on the comments of Paula, Robert’s sister in todays Daily Ireland. Paula is reported as saying “that insisting that people go to the PSNI could prove counter-productive and stem the flow of information about her brother’s murder. It doesn’t matter who they go to, as long as they pass on the information”
I wonder if Pat McCarthy, who moved last nights motion on behalf of the SDLP has a particular insight and understanding of such events?
I ask this because a number of years ago the Sunday World was reporting an exclusive story about two brothers feuding over a greyhound. One of the brothers was attacked by a hatchet weilding brother who left him seriously injured and hospitalised. The injured man was called Dominic McCarthy whose only living brother was called Pat. We should be told if this is the same Pat.

…though quite what this has to do with anything is anyone’s guess.

Why did Daily Ireland not give this story an ‘Exclusive’ tag? After all, no-one else reported it.

Without doubt the SDLP are playing politics with this issue abd its a disgrace. Everyone should support and help the Mc Cartney family and stop making political mileage out of this horrific incident. I support the family go to who ever but come forward and allow this family to start the grieving process.

TT if this is the same person I wonder maybe he should give himself up to the PSNI or is it acceptable that SDLP can cover up for criminality in their ranks. I live in Derry and there are at least two prominent SDLP members that have been involved in crime one selling contraband cds, dvds and cigaretes and the other stealing from a vulnerable person at their workplace both reported to the party and both ignored. This is no way implicates the SDLP in criminality but when their spokespersons accuse all republicans of criminality maybe they should take a look around themselves.

Are you looking for an editorial job there BG?

  • J Kelly

BG whats your point are you suggesting that the Mc Cartney sisters are not saying this.

  • barney

BG, Paula McCArtney’s views were also reported on RTE Radio 1 at lunchtime. Hope that helps.

  • PaddyCanuck

Most other media outlets do not report it BG because it does not fit in with their political agenda.

Hugh Order and the Ombudsman are also asking people who do not support the police to give it to someone else.

  • barney

Paul Murphy and Dermot Ahern are also on board with the SF approach, Mick has provided a link on another thread. The SDLP are left looking isolated, petty, opportunistic and foolish.

The Ombudsman and Hugh Orde have both stated that for a successful prosecution the police will require evidence in court.

Paula is reported as saying “that…It doesn’t matter who they go to, as long as they pass on the information”

While it “doesn’t matter who they go to” initially the police will have to be involved before a successful prosecution can be brought, is anyone really suggesting that those investigating this murder don’t know who did what, its evidence needed to prepare a prosecution that’s lacking.
No doubt it would suit Sinn Fein IRA if all the ‘evidence’ the police ends up with is uncorroborated confessions with no clear indication of who did what. Remember what happened in the aftermath of the McCabe killing at Adare, due to threats the authorities had to settle for manslaughter charges, will we see a repeat this time as well?

“the truth”, another Sinn Fein mudslinger trying to throw muck at people who dare to criticize his party.

    J Kelly,

talking of Derrymen, you wouldn’t be the failed Sinn Fein candidate of 2001, would you???

Also, since you and the squeaky clean Republican movement hate false allegations are you prepared to name and shame the 2 stoops??

Come on now ‘J’, if we were prepared to go down a personal line I could name you a prominent Republican who was involved in some electoral shenanigans in Doire in 2001.

And talk about having a brass neck – the Stoops politicising the murder of Robert McCartney – the republican movement have never used anything to move their political party forward!!

Jaysus, Truth, your quick off the mark, from what I hear, if the SDLP was serious about people going to the PSNI in relation to crime they would have to open a unit dealing solely with them,
    dirty deals
    slave labour
    former official IRA gun men
they have them all and thats just in Belfast!!!!

  • Roger W. Christ XVII

BWD, you want to name names ?

  • Davros

Erm, let’s not go there Roger and BWD.

  • big white dove

Sorry Roger just saw your response, I dont need to name names, anyone with a litle knowledge of city hall politics knows who I am talking about, its a shame that there are no investigative journalists left in the north, I wish I was one for I would make a packet! maybe the Sunday World would buy them off me ha ha
