Unionist President..?

AM I right in thinking that a unionist candidate has just become the new President of Queen’s University Students’ Union? Maybe not such a cold house after all, if this is indeed the case..?

  • AndrewD

Wouldn’t say that he is ‘Unionist’.

    He stood as an independent.

Really decent guy who will work for the good of everyone.

  • Ben

AndrewD’s right, I am indeed independent!!

  • Davros

Congratulations Ben. What sort of response did you get from your rivals ?

  • Ben

I was taken back actually by the gracious nature of the other candidates. They all spoke well of me and my campaign after the count. On the election day itself there was also great banter and craic between us all.

  • Davros

That’s encouraging for the future 🙂

  • Belfast Gonzo

My apologies Ben. Good luck for your year in office.

  • Hardy Handshake

    Ben,

Congratulations on your election but can I ask you – are the elections at Queens as corrupt as they used to be ? I can recall voting over 20 times each for several key-office holders in the late 1980s, is it monitored independently these days and if so by whom ? Also, is there as much free drink as there used to be for the ‘inner circle’ and are the DC as violent as they used to be ?

  • Ben

Lol, 20 times?? Nah these days they make sure you have only voted once using the digital chip on the back of the student card. As for the free drink… I sure haven’t seen any of it but then I am not in the ‘inner circle’ 🙂 Our count wasn’t violent or anything, only 3 from each party are allowed in and it is done the next day so it is all very civilised!!

A glorious smack in the gob for Gaskin and his pals!

Well done to Ben and Peter Quinn (Victorious DP candidate). Although I would have preferred to see The Rooster elected DP, Peter was in my year and a decent bloke.

A glorious smack in the gob for Gaskin and his pals!

I hope that’s tongue in cheek ? Otherwise it makes you look like the Student Union Political equivalent of the yobs in the Holy Land….

  • Rebecca Black

Excellent news, I’m sick of hearing about republicans dominating university student unions.

  • barney

“Excellent news, I’m sick of hearing about republicans dominating university student unions.”

Is that why you went to Trinity?

  • Rebecca Black

well Trinity SU is dominated by republicans too – last years president was Fianna Fail, the newly elected one is Sinn Fein.

I’d just like to see a few more from other backgrounds climbing the ranks of the SU.

  • Davros

A glorious smack in the gob for Gaskin and his pals!

Any comment about today’s results Christopher ?

A very happy little bird tells me that SF did rather well … is that a “glorious smack in the gob” for you and yours ?

  • PS

Reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated!

Not at all. A fortnight ago, SF/IRA held the Deputy Presidency and were being tipped for the top post. They now hold neither.

They managed to get one member elected because nobody else stood against her, and, oh yes, their mate in Queens GAA, who was allegedly banned from playing for a period, after breaking someones jaw in a fist-fit was elected also.

The candidate who recievd the endorsement of the outgoing President, who SF/IRA have harried and tormented for the last eight months, defeated SF/IRA candidate by a hefty margin.

So, all things considered, my earlier comments stand! Sinn Fein losing elections in the Students Union, is like Sinn Fein losing elections in West Belfast – only a bunch of incredibly stupid people could achieve such a feat.

Then again Paddy Hughes et al where standing for election on the basis of their record…

Lets set things straight once and for all

Last year we had 1 Sabbatical, this year we have 2 along with a supporter

    An improvement in anyone’s eyes

Out of the 5 members of the executive elected thus far we have 3 and we still have non-sabbatical elections to go yet which I am very confident we can take.

As for the Presidential election, you can’t beat Jesus 😉

What was interesting was how the DUA got shafted by the CU.

“President, who SF/IRA have harried and tormented for the last eight months”

Please provide evidence for this ridiculous statement

I sense the same sad mentality emanating from you now Christopher that you showed at queens, get a life and sort out your own house before you start lecturing us on ours.

  • Green Party Supporter

really glad to see people do take turns in being presidents at the QUBSU – some of my Unionist mates refused to go into the Student Union because it was “too Republican” for their likes etc – as long as everyone is welcome at the SU, that is the very positive step forward.

maybe we can see a “Green” president next? :p

Interesting observation cg, care to elaborate on that?
