Sinn Fein knew of plans if not detail

We were fairly sure that this issue was going to be a bit of a slow burner. The two police chiefs told the Taoiseach today: a number of operations that took place during 2004 – not just the Northern Bank robbery – were the work of the IRA, had sanction from the Army Council and would have been known to the political leadership of the IRA”.

Indeed the Irish Independent plausibly claims that the raid took up to two years in planning, and that it is inconceivable that the leadership of Sinn Fein were not aware of an operation on such a massive scale.

The report points to a number of key factors that underlines the view that the IRA is the only organisation, political or criminal, with the capacity to have organised such a raid:

“ The kidnapping of a bank official from the heart of republican west Belfast.

The theft of an unusual type of van, required to “clone” a similar vehicle known to regularly cross the Border, from a compound in Gwent in Wales.

The secrecy surrounding the heist which left the security sources without any prior hint.

The subsequent disappearance of the money and the van”.

Apparently there has been an IRA statement tonight criticizing all and sundry. Are toys about to be thrown out of the pram now that the constant pandering to SF/IRA sems to be over, at least for the time being?

  • drumcree

Yes the PIRA have just released a statement withdrawing their supposed offer to put weapons beyond use – their arrogance just never ceases to amaze me

“1.The kidnapping of a bank official from the heart of republican west Belfast”

    And that proves what?

“2. The theft of an unusual type of van, required to “clone” a similar vehicle known to regularly cross the Border,”

    Known to whom?

“3. The secrecy surrounding the heist which left the security sources without any prior hint”

Possibly the incompetence of the psni or perhaps because there main function isn’t to protect law and order but to do “political work”

Their incompetence is well documented i.e. In Newry and Mourne only 3% of crimes were solved

“4. The subsequent disappearance of the money and the van”

    Again psni incompetence

    CG,
You are obviously in SF/IRA. SO this type of response is only to be expected from a bigot.

  • cg

    “CG,
    You are obviously in SF/IRA.”

Yes I am in Sinn Féin however I am not a member of Oglaigh na hEireann.

    “expected from a bigot”

Please produce evidence as to support your claim that I am a bigot or else withdraw this scurrilous accusation.

  • puddinhead

    Not an accusation. A fact.
For starters the picture in your profile would be seen as bigotted by the majority of people.

2 Your defence of a group that has been responsible for many sectarian murders.

    I could go on

  • Davros

puddinhead you are out of order IMO.

That picture is only one of many different republician pictures from South Armagh

It shows how South Armagh used to be, It also shows my support and admiration for a group of men and woman who, some of whom gave their lives, fought for Irish Freedom and If thats bigoted then I am proud to be a bigot.

The reality however is that it isn’t

puddinhead – what’s the difference between Chris and his picture and our community memorialising events of The Glorious Revolution through Iconography ?
To me it’s a form of dark humour, no different from the sort of thing I enjoy from Newton Emerson or DoktorMoog. You’ll no more get him and people like him to accept demonisation of the IRA than they would get people like me to accept demonisation of the RUC. These attitudes are as deeply held as religion. We need to work on areas where progress is possible.

  • cg

“they would get people like me to accept demonisation of the RUC”

Don’t worry I will achieve that Davros, It just takes the dark side longer ;)LOL

I think comments like that (whether sarcastic or not) merely add credance to the demands that PIRA must make a choice between war and peace, a choice they seem incapable of making.

Perhaps on reflection PIRA do not have the self confidence that their arguments for a United Ireland would stand up to rigorous scrutiny on a purely deomocratic basis, and that PIRA’s failure to follow through on the acts of completion required by the Good Friday Agreement signifiies their delayed realisation that acceptance of the Good Friday Agreement really means that they have lost the war.

You are reading way too much into a light-hearted exchange between two posters on friendly terms drumcree. Elsewhere I have joked about measuring cg up for a bowler when I bring him into the light 😉
