TD denies he's a member of IRA Army Council

Big news of the weekend was Mary Harney’s attack on Sinn Fein, and notably she claimed that Kerry North Sinn Féin TD Mr Martin Ferris was a member of the IRA’s Army Council. A claim which Ferris denies. However it seems likely that without a legal response, it is now open for political rivals to make such explicit claims of Sinn Fein’s interconnection with the senior ranks of the IRA.

The Irish Examiner carried a different version.

“Tánaiste Mary Harney said she believed the North Kerry TD to be among “Oireachtas members” on the council, the high command of one of the world’s most ruthless terrorist organisations.”

Allegations about Ferris have been floating around for a long time, but who else has she in mind ?

It’s a serious claim, and needs to be looked into, but I won’t hold my breath, considering the continuing British / Irish government’s “softly, softly” approach to Sinn Fein/IRA

How does one become a Council member?

Were have been consistently told the the IRA are governed by a seven person Army Council and over the past number of years it must have increased now to have at least twenty according to Tthe media or which politician speaks. Lets be serious they cant all be on the army coucil. But its news when they change a name and introduce a new name.
