Sinn Fein's difficulty: SDLP's opportunity?

Paul C Colgan on the political tightrope the SDLP will need to walk if it is to successfully take advantage of its rival’s little local difficulty in the wake of the Northern Bank heist.

    Pakman,
Anyone with a Nationalist opinion may annoy Unionists. But you must remember that we all have to live here, like it or not.
Nationalists may not like the fact that the North West part of Ireland is under British Rule, however in 1998 we endorsed that by signing the Good Friday Agreement yet Unionists continue to bicker about this that and the other.
Everyone on the Island of Ireland has the right to express their culture freely and without hindrance as long as they do it without intimidating others.
I aspire a United Ireland Pakman but do not believe bloodshed is necessary to achieve that. I am happy to accept your British identity on the island of Ireland, its just a pity that Unionists had trouble accepting my Irish identity when I was growing up.

“Fermanagh Sth Tyrone – Foster (She will get the majority Unionist vote – Unionists will be motivated to vote for her to unseat Gildernew)”

The majority unionist vote won’t do it for her though. F&ST has a small nationalist voting majority so only the total unionist vote would get her past the finishing line. If Tom Elliott stays in the race then even if Foster routs him for the unionist vote, he’ll still take enough unionist votes out of the DUP column to ensure she doesn’t take the seat, and vice versa.

No unionist has ever won Fermanagh and South Tyrone when there was another unionist in the field. This, allied to the fact that the nationalist vote, I predict, will be less evenly divided than in the past, means that the only real chance of a unionist victory would be if either Foster or Elliott stood aside. Neither seems willing to do so at this stage.

As for Foyle, I don’t think Mitchel’s recent comments will be decisive for many voters in Foyle four months from now. I think I am right in saying – perhaps someone can help me out here – that the SDLP vote in Foyle collapsed in the European elections? Now, in fairness no-one in Derry had ever heard of Martin Morgan before, and Durkan won’t have that problem. But there is the danger that Foyle, like Newry and Armagh, is a Sinn Fein constituency waiting to happen, and has consistently voted for a colossus who happened to be in the SDLP, rather than for the SDLP.

The Provos will win F&ST easily, even against an agreed unionist candidate, due to the continuing collapse of the SDLP vote.

Had the DUP puppet candidate not stood against the UUP in 2001, things might be different. But the DUP’s handing of the seat to the Provos has given Gildernew four years to establish a profile for herself while her SDLP opponent is a bit of a nobody.

I’m not sure where the notion that Mitchel McLaughlin has been holed below the waterline over his recent comments concerning Foyle has come from. Outside of one rabid anti republican columnist in the Derry Journal his remarks have gone largely uncommented on in the city. On top of that people in Derry, even those with no love of SF, will acknowledge the central role he has played in the development of the Peace Process and his contribution to the advances of the last 10 years.

On top of that we are still faced with Durkans unimpressive performance since he became party leader, the extremely fractious relationship he has with a large part of the SDLP in the city, who may or may not work for him, and the steady decline of the SDLP non Hume vote, which local legend has it fell behind SF in the European election.

Billy P I agree entirely with you Mitchels comments made recently put up against his contribution to the peace process will have little effect. No one can argue the time and effort that Mitchel McLaughlin has put into the peace process. It has been said on many occasions that he was one of the key architects of the entire peace process and without his forward thinking and political skill to encourage republicans to think of other ways of achieving their goals we wouldn’t be here today. So for anyone to expect Mitchel to throw away a lifetimes work and effort just to please Michael Mc Dowell needs to catch themselves on. Would people prefer that he puts himself on the outside of republicanism or stay at the centre and bring his considerable influence to bear to ensure that the peace process finally reaches the end for all the people of Ireland.

Mitchel McLaughlin is without doubt one of the great politicians and peacemakers of this era and its about time he got some credit for his contribution to the peace process.

There is no doubt that the SDLP vote in Derry has collapsed one only has to look at their list of candidates for the locals. Its made up of pensioners who if the party could they would retire them, family members Mark Durkans nephew and John Humes neice plus a father and son double act and finally at least 5 party employees. Its no secret in Derry that the SDLP having been trawling far and near to get candidates with very little success. It is also an open secret that they are split down the middle which doesn’t instil confidence in the electorate. The writing is on the wall in Derry for the SDLP. You Are Entering……
