Fair Comment or OTT ?

David McKittrick seems to expect trouble when Adair is released.
Belfast braced for new loyalist feud as ‘Mad Dog’ Adair nears jail release.
Is this fair comment or does this sort of article itself contribute to the possibility of trouble?

While McKittrick writes that Belfast is ‘bracing itself’ he doesn’t quote any sources to back up his claim that trouble is expected. I don’t consider this to be one of his better pieces.

more to the point why isn’t mckittrick writing about who did the northern bank, an issue of greater importance than whacked-out old loyalist has-beens?

  • Pat Mc Larnon

    Tom,

perhaps as a journalist of some standing and rather than fly the contradictory kites of some journalists, he is keeping quiet because he has no factual information to hand.

  • maca

Adare has been told to leave NI upon his release (if we are to believe reports), if he decides not to leave with this not lead to a continuation of the feud? Is McKittrick not just stating what many are expecting?

  • Cahal

“Since then, the authorities have put much effort into calming down loyalist groupings and attempting to encourage less extreme elements in their ranks”

FFS, it’s a terrorist organization! Less extreme elements – what’s that all about? Maybe the less extreme elements in the UDA only sell crack cocaine to people who are over eighteen and only shoot people who attend mass regularly.

Pat, you’re taking a serious amount of crap over this story. Even if it was the IRA, I have to agree with you. I have never seen so many ‘unnamed sources’ before. The amount of shear speculation in the media is ridiculous.

  • Cahal

Pat, obviously taking about the Northern Bank robbery there….

  • Ziznivy

He’s just taking a slant on the release. Can’t see it making a difference either way. Do many loyalist hoods take The Independent?

  • Young Republican

    will Adair return to belfast?

better ask the spooks of Brit intelligence…

  • Pat Mc Larnon

Maybe Johnnie will just choose to keep his head down. Even he must know that the next time around he will be facing down the wrong end of a life sentence.

    Cahal,

sure it’s all mighty craic, it will get even better when Orde capitulates and issues his statement.

Pat : Point to me is that McKittrick doesn’t present any facts or sources to support this article, so it’s every bit as speculative as anything he could and other journalists have written about the abduction and terrorising of 2 families- let’s not forget that this wasn’t a “Robin Hood” operation, two families were terrorised. So if you are going to criticise as above and insist that your criticisms are not based on irritation that it’s republicans and the provos taking the blame from Journalists, then I would expect you to be equally dismissive of McKittrick.

  • Cahal

Davros, I think we can all agree that the article about Adair is again purely speculative – that is the purpose of this article I thought, i.e. speculating on what he with the shiny scalp will do when he is released. Obviously as it has not happened yet, McKittrick can ONLY speculate in this case. I think the robbery is a whole different kettle of fish.

  • Pat Mc Larnon

    Davros,

I base my assessment on Mc Kitterick solely on his track record and the lack of sensationalism of his previous stories.
There are no sources, dependable or otherwise. So no irritation on my part.

  • Davros

Then why the OTT “statement” in the headline ?
Is Belfast ‘bracing’ itself ? Pat, you live in Belfast , is it a hot issue ?

  • Davros

Do many loyalist hoods take The Independent?

I doubt it, but I’ll bet quite a few take the Belfast Telegraph and will read this.

    Irresponsible Journalism IMO.

  • Pat Mc Larnon

    Davros,

there is an interest in Adair, simply because he is a controversial figure. Most people I talk to see him as a man on the wrong side of forty with little or no support and therefore suitably chastened.
He and White may well have a stash somewhere and he will probably settle for that. However, it would be interesting to hear what the ordinary people on the Shankill think, things seem to have quietened down significantly in the last year.

  • Davros

I agree Pat. That’s why I disapprove of McKittrick’s piece.

  • loyalist

D McK – the Pat McLarnon approved journo.
I thought Mckittrick had prophesied a United Ireland by now. Too much time in London, and not enough on the Shankill, obviously.

  • Davros

Well, he’s out now. Belfast ? Seems quiet.
