Security source blames IRA for heist

According to David Lister, British security officials are briefing journalists that the Northern Bank heist was the work of the IRA. So far there has been no word from Hugh Orde or any official within the PSNI, but such a line, he speculates, must be causing some severe embarrassment within police circles.

Enough of these briefings. If the RUC/PSNI has the evidence, let them present it, or at least go on the public record regarding who they believe is responsible. The IRA has gone on record saying they have nothing to do with it. If it is proven that they are involved, then they are even more discredited than before and they can be seen to be what many have always believed to be; a bunch of criminal thugs.

  • Davros

Keith, one of the papers or news services mentioned that the IRA disclaimer was unusual in that it wasn’t issued by P O’Neill. Does anybody know if there is any truth in this ?

I would’ve thought that robbing a bank would have been a breach of the early release scheme…

Or, is “normal” crime fair game these days?

  • mickhall

I often wonder if the security services and the police brief journalists, after high profile crimes that they were the work of Republicans, in the belief this will make the media less hostile to the fact that they have not caught anyone.

  • Pat Mc Larnon

Orde is leaving the local dupes like Kincaid to carry the can. That will strengthen his hand in his belief that detectives from England etc are of a higher calibre and are ripe for recruitment. If anything it shows that Orde has no faith at all in the people he inherited.

The piece by Lister is pure magic and shows the level of professional journalism at work here.

(a)’but sources said yesterday that the true figure may be as high as £40 million.’

(b)One security official said: “If, as it now appears likely, this money has been taken by the IRA,

(c)’With something as big as this you would have expected in the past to have got a sniff that something was going on,” said one source.’

Talk about money for old rope. All the anonymous sources you like without having on reliable quote.
Exclusive; those in the know are saying nothing, those who don’t know are talking crap. Cheque in the post please.

Might have been helpful if the SF Newsroom hadn’t gone on the run Pat …

  • abucs

The anonymous quote regarding rank and file members getting their cut, and talking about holiday houses and pensions seems designed to stir up trouble.

  • Davros

or is it an accurate reflection of unhappiness within the movement at the disparity in wealth?

  • Pat Mc Larnon

‘Might have been helpful if the SF Newsroom hadn’t gone on the run Pat ..’

Davros you seem disappointed that the Shinners won’t play the game using Unionist rules. Are you surprised?

  • Davros

Pat, believe it or not, I read and enjoy their releases regularly, and some authoritative feed-back would be useful.

The DUPes are a bit quiet on the implications of the Provos being involved in the heist, Peter Robinson seemed to be choosing his words carefully, not rulling out sharing power with the Shinners even if they are blamed.

A Pacifica wag labeled the US Media “Administration Stenographers”. Murdoch’s flack is no less.

“If the RUC/PSNI has the evidence, let them present it”

Christ, Hell just froze over and I’m in agreement with the Blueshirts. I gotta start working on that drinking problem again.

Pretty sure I read a report that the Garda think it was the Provo`s…..due to mobile phone activity or something

or maybe they figure that the provos all love ice scating alan

Didn’t a couple of the swiped notes turn up in Pete’s constituency?.

Hmmm, do I detect a pattern emerging?

As it becomes clear that there were Republican fingers in the £25 million pie, it’s a prime opportunity for the DUP to take a rather large step back. Even a couple of years ago there would have been a cacophony of condemnation from those quarters. This time Peter Robinson seemed to suggest that even if the IRA were unofficially linked to the raid it wouldn’t necessarily rule out a deal. My guess is that the DUP, particularly the Robinson wing, are geared towards a deal and that it suits them to ignore these unofficial whisperings. The political consequences of making a song and dance and then going into government regardless would be severe.
