Ógra Shinn Féin – Béal Feirste go online

In a rather subdued way Ógra Shinn Féin — Béal Feirste (ÓSFBF) has gone online as of December 6th.
I can see no mention of this on the Sinn Féin website, but happened upon a letter from Jimmy Madden, in the current edition of An Phoblacht.

A well designed site, easy to read and with an interesting manifesto for 2004. The suggestion that elections should be held at week-ends is sensible, however I’m not impressed with the idea that the state should provide third party insurance for young people. The reason their premiums are so high is because so many of them drive dangerously.

That aside the manifesto is well written and would, I suspect, be considered less difficult for Unionists than equivalent Sinn Féin documents in that it focuses on positive ways to change society rather than relying on criticism of the status quo and attacks on opponents. Augurs well for the future. Well done ÓSFBF. Added to my bookmarks.

I see that The Young Unionists have launched a website.

  • maca

…website needs a bit of work.
    “FONT color=#808080” : MY GOD WEBMASTER IT’S 2004!!
(A good example of the North still living in the past.)

Anyway you’d thing young folk would have better things to be doing instead of politiking! Like getting high, wrecking the gaff after an all weekend party and other such young-folkish things.

    MY GOD WEBMASTER IT’S 2004!!

    Not in Northern Ireland 😉

  • George

Don’t like the OSF logo and what’s with the popup adds?

As for the young unionist site, I see Stephen Warke is put as being in East Belfast but is the West Belfast Representative.

  • maca

    “Not in Northern Ireland ;)”

…oh yeah, I forgot the time difference 😉

  • maca

Btw I was talking about the Unionist site, the SF site is dreadful too but gets a thumbs up for being bilingual.

  • Davros

George – use Firefox, that’ll take care of the up-pops. I like the ÓSFBF site – which logo don’t you like ? The small one that looks like a floral clock, or the larger version that has “revolution” at the bottom ?

  • Davros

Maca – I’m tempted to write to Lord lurid and ask him to contact ÓSFBF …. why is there not an Ulster-Scots facilty ? ( How’s THAT for poop stirring ? LOL )

  • George

Don’t like the OSF on the green five pointed star logo.

Reminds me of something German radical left wingers would create to woo the criminalised graffiti kids towards their policies.

As for the revolution one, that just adds to that reminder.

Graffiti kidds are the newest victims of criminalisation in Germany as the authorities believe where there’s graffiti, there’s poverty, danger and dirt.

In Berlin they set up a special full-time police commission of 50 cops to crush it. House searches at dawn.

“I’m tempted to write to Lord lurid”
He might get the fundng cut for the site, they’d have to lay off the webmaster 😉
Might be no harm actually, sack the graphic designer too.

  • Davros

One thing I find surprising – they are less rather than more ardent than “grown-up” SF 😉 Unusual as the young tend to be more extreme than the more mature. Another thing – Does the age range for ÓSFBF mean that one has to be Older than 25 to join
    Sinn Féin ?

  • willowfield

Don’t like the OSF logo …

Have they ditched the petrol bomb?

Check out the site WF – There’s a lot less on their site to raise unionist hackles than on mainstream SF site. If the DUP and Govt had been dealing with them I reckon it would have been signed, sealed and delivered by now.

  • unionist_observer

I hope that this Ogra Sinn Fein do not copy Trinity Ogra Sinn Fein and have men waving machine guns on their website, fairly tasteless.

I see there are some complaints about the Young Unionist website, what exactly is wrong with it?

  • maca

“I see there are some complaints about the Young Unionist website, what exactly is wrong with it?”

    It’s not very good.

  • unionist_observer

I have a had a look round the Ogra SF site and its better than theirs!

The YU one was not professionally done, we didn’t have enough money for that, it was done by a friend.

However, it is clearly laid out, easy to navigate and puts out our message online, not much wrong with that.

  • maca

Not trying to put ye down or anything UO 😉 , just speaking as someone with an interest in web design. I think the SF one is worse than yours. I could make some suggestions if your webmaster was interested in the opinion of a non-unionist? 😉

  • unionist_observer

the guy who designed our website is technically a non unionist maca!!! We wouldn’t mind some advice on it if you wouldn’t mind.

  • maca

    You got an email address?

  • Michael Shilliday

If you have any suggestions on the website send them to info@youngunionists.org.uk and I’ll make sure they’re looked at.

  • willowfield

We are active on many issues ranging from the campaign for a proper police service to protesting against racist and sectarian attacks.

    That’s progress.

  • maca

Michael, i’ve sent a basic critique to your colleague.

  • cg

“Does the age range for ÓSFBF mean that one has to be Older than 25 to join
    Sinn Féin ?”

No, you can join Sinn Féin from 16.

  • Michael Shilliday

Being the Publications Officer I would appreciate you sending any comments to me at info@youngunionists.org.uk, particular given I don’t know who my “colleague” is.

  • maca

    I sent them to unionist_observer

  • Michael Shilliday

And I have no idea who that is.

  • Davros

Seeing as both paddy and Fluffy Dangleberry are online, Can one belong to SF and ÓSF at the same time ?

  • cg

“Seeing as both paddy and Fluffy Dangleberry are online, Can one belong to SF and ÓSF at the same time ?”

    LOL (Fluffy Dangleberry)

Davros in answer to your question yes.
It is very common and there are also young people who only belong to Sinn Féin and not OSF.

  • Davros

    Cheers Chris 🙂

  • peteb

You forgot to ask whether they were also ‘inextricable linked’, Davros 😉
