You’re showing your age, guys ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Davros

First time I saw them they performed the Tain in it’s entirity ๐Ÿ™‚ Fantastic.

  • willowfield

    An awful, awful group.

    Dreadful.

  • Davros

Did you ever see them WF ?

  • Gerry O’Sullivan

Horslips was the music I grew up litening to. Growing up in rural Co Mayo meant that I didn’t get easy access to a lot of contemporary music (even major Irish acts like Rory Gallagher or thin Lizzy) , and so had to rely on my older brothers’ LPs to develop my youthful taste in music. (Thankfully they weren’t fans of Joe Dolan and Johnny McEvoy!) This was before RTE Radio Two was launched and TV consisted of one channel.

These guys played in the dancehalls of Ireland. They often played in towns near where I grew up, like Kiltimagh and Claremorris, but I never got to see them live in all their spandex-clad glory. The rule in our house was that you could only go to dances after you had done your Inter Cert, and Horslips had broken up before I had done mine.

I picked up a compilation CD of their music a while back, and having not listened to them for years, I was able to go back at them with fresh ears. The songwriting and playing was just superb. (However, the sound on the disc wasn’t great, mainly because it was released by a company who didn’t actually own the rights to Horslips’ music. The band members had to go through a marathon court battle to reassert their rights over their own music.)

This new CD is definitely on my Christmas wish list.

Did you ever see them WF ?

Certainly not. Listening is bad enough.

    An awful, awful group.

    Dreadful.

That’s a matter of opinion, Willowfield. Just because you didn’t like them doesn’t mean they weren’t any good ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • slackjaw

A cracking band, but not without some iffy prog-rock excesses.

    slackjaw

… but not without some iffy prog-rock excesses.

Well, they were at the height of their pomp in the mid-70s, after all ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Davros

WF, they were a band that were far better live than in the Studio – much the same as Rory Gallagher.

Gerry, I wonder how many of the youngsters here understand the resonance of “dance hall ” and “show band” to our generation and the generation before us ? ๐Ÿ˜‰

That is not an excuse ๐Ÿ™‚

    Davros

Comparing Horslips with Rory Gallagher is sacrilege.

  • George

Horslips are like a glam rock version of Jethro Tull.
Fortunately, they were even before my big brother’s time.
I did once make the pilgramage to the legendary Phil Lynott’s grave to lay a rose though…

  • slackjaw

They are also, of course, indirectly responsible for the worst (although quite a few may claim the best) Irish song ever…

  • Davros

How do you know ? You never say Horslips live ?

  • Davros

Horslips are like a glam rock version of Jethro Tull.

    Eh ? I saw Jethro Tull as well :)I don’t agree !

  • ShayPaul

Go on slackjaw sing it for us.

Davros will be the piano driver.

  • Davros

If I sang it would strain the ceasefire and would probably be a Human Rights breach ๐Ÿ˜‰

C’mon you stupid Irish buggers. I’m an Aussie who believes Horslips were the greatest band in the world……… ever. Big statement but IMHO they were it. You lot should be very proud. Get out there and buy all their albums, listen to them intently, take in their humour, absorb their musicianship, wonder at their songs…..they were the Irish equivalent to the Beatles. I am very emotional! How great it is that they are back.
    You little ball tearer!!!!!!!!!!!
