easing of electoral register requirements

ministerial statement at westminster from john spellar indicates government are withdrawing need for annual re-registration for voters

  • The Devil

    Thats brill news,

The D.U.P get the illegal guns

The S.F get the illegal votes

  • Will

    Devil,
The fall off in the electoral register is not just an issue which is affecting republican areas.

The tightening of the requirements with regard to National Insurance Numbers and photo ID is what unionists fought hardest for in order to reduce personation at the polling station and multiple registration. Yearly registration doesnt make that much difference to those aspects.

What they should be doing instead of yearly registrations is going through all of those who have registerd to ensure that the Nat Insurance numbers given are genuine.

  • The Devil

    Thats the point will,

This will be forgotten in no time.

  • The Devil

I suppose the D.U.P could always shoot them for vote stealing now they have a load of Aks about them.

  • Davros

If people were too dim to work out how to keep on the register, should they be voting ?
Forms dropped off and forms collected every year …

Wasn’t it the SDLP who fought hardest on this?

Despite the problems with registration I do not think this is a positive move.

The annual registration was an opportunity for political parties to have an annual dialogue with voters by working at a grass-roots level to maintain the register. Unfortunately too many of our parties are caught in the cycle of holding a monthly meeting with a speaker and only thinking about non-meeting activities at election time.

This ‘lazy’ culture contributes to the cynical attitude among voters about ‘Only seeing politicians at election time’. The annual registration was a missed opportunity to redress this.

  • Pat Mc Larnon

Oh dear, what a pathetic little climbdown.

  • Davros

almost as big a climbdown as “not a bullet, not an ounce ” Pat ? 😉

  • Roger W. Christ XVII

I thought the sticks were used to climbdowns Pat.

  • D’Oracle

Is there a trade-off between paranoia and anarchy if not dictatorship. Do it monthly and almost no one could vote!

  • Young Fogey

Long overdue in my view. No Jim Crow in NI!

  • Pat Mc Larnon

Or not a ‘Fenian about the place’ Davros

  • Davros

Anusing that you have to go waaaaaay back to the 1930’s Pat to find anything remotely equivalent:)

  • Pat Mc Larnon

I still think that is a massive sentiment among unreconstructed bigots in both the DUP and UUP. As for not a bullet not an ounce, it just goes to show the lengths some are willing to go to bring true peace. Others prefer the denial of UR weapons etc.

  • Davros

Pat – how much time do you spend in the flesh mixing with members of the UUP and DUP ?

denial of UR weapons ? Proof please that they still exist beyond supposition , and proof that they are or were legally held weapons 🙂

  • Roger W. Christ XVII

Davros, I could ask you for proof that the IRA’s weapons exist. However I won’t because I know it would be disingenuous, since nobody has any proof of how many exist and they often say that the IRA don’t even know themselves.

We never got around to dealing with the questions on the other thread. How can we be convinced that unionists are committed to peaceful and democratic means given their predisposition to relying on loyalist paramilitaries to step in whenever things get too hot ? The talk of weapons, whether they are legal and who holds them barely seems relevant. When paramilitarism kicks in, unionism is happy to stay out of the way and allow it to take it’s course.

  • Davros

Davros, I could ask you for proof that the IRA’s weapons exist.

Roger the proof that IRA weapons exist are in graveyards all over NI and the UK .

Please name one person UR murdered.

  • Young Fogey

The only reason Ulster Resistance murdered nobody was because they were the typical sort of idiotic loyalist thug and couldn’t shoot straight!

  • Davros

    YF, that’s silly.
