Mary's Molotov moment…

THE Irish President was nearly a petrol bomber, Maureen Coleman discovers. During an attack by loyalists on Ardoyne, a young Mary McAleese’s father stopped her from throwing the devices, which had a profound effect on how she viewed violence.

  • Peter Brown

Hmmm this is the same Mary McAleese who remembers the blood and thunder loyalist bands banging out the National Anthem as they marched past the Ardoyne when commenting on the Graduation debate at Queens a decade ago so no grounds to question her recollection and objectivity then….

  • Michael Shilliday

I’ve always found that comment curious. I’ve never once seen a band march, while playing the national anthem…..

  • willowfield

Nor I. It’s not a marching tune. Nor is it appropriate to march while playing the anthem. You’re supposed to stand to attention.

  • Pat Mc Larnon

    A defining moment, please zzzzzzzzzzz.

  • Peter Brown

Hence my comment….poor recollection or over vivid imagination but used to score points in a political debate and never to the best of my knowledge retracted

  • ulsterman

Says it all does it not. She is not fit to be President of anything.

She should be arrested and handed over to the PSNI and shot as a terrorist.

    God Save The Queen.

  • Millie

Ulsterman, I take it it’s a criminal offence in your book to defend your homes and neighbours from police and mob attack. Or does that just apply to Catholics?

  • Davros

Millie now seems to be supporting the formation of the UDA.

  • Millie

Most people agree that Ed Moloney wrote a pretty book about the IRA, and even he states that the Shankill Defence Association and other similar defence groups that sprang up in loyalist areas in 1969, although ostensibily formed for defence, were in reality there to attack nationalist areas. A case of getting your retaliation in first. McAleese was describing one such attack.

  • willowfield

So Millie thinks McAleese was wrong not to throw the petrol bomb?

  • Davros

So you are justifying the UDA millie. Well, you are at least consistent.

  • Millie

Davros, either you’re missing the point or you’re smoking something that doesn’t agree with you 😉

  • James

This romper room is getting out of hand again Sluggiewuggies, so settle down.

The only message I draw from Mary Mac’s experience is that responsible parental control could have saved you one hell of a lot of grief.

  • Davros

    Spoilsport James 😉
