SDLP presses IMC for details

Alex Attwood, the SDLP’s security spokesman, has called for the IMC to name names in its next report arguing that criminality in Northern Ireland is the biggest single threat to business and democracy.

The old saying “be careful what you wish for” comes to mind here. If the IMC says (as widely reported) that SF/IRA were behind recent highjackings and thefts related to tobacco products, will the SDLP do the honourable thing and disassociate themselves with the republicans and not insist on them being part of any power sharing executive or will the continue to be the increasingly irrelevant nodding donkeys proping up pan-nationalism?

  • Pat Mc Larnon

If the IMC is honest and more importantly accurate with their latest report then organisations should be named.
However, the IMC has to be totally transparent in telling us who exactly they get their information from. That way it is easy to judge the credibility of those sources.

If unionist paramilitaries continue to be responsible for the overwhelming majority of violence then that point should be highlighted above all others. The weaponry of those unionists and those responsible for giving them those weapons are also of great interest. That way democrats can indeed disassociate themselves from sectarian bigots.

Although given the cack handed and totally incompetent way the IMC dealt with previous reports one can only expect a similar slip shod approach from people who themselves admit they are no experts.

The SDLP have a distinct nationalist mandate, and have nothing to hide. That is why they want the IMC to name names. If certain parties have nothing to hide, they have nothing to worry about. If they have something to hide, then it’s time they sorted themselves out. No one has anything to fear from the truth, except those who have something to hide.

The sooner we know what’s really going on, the sooner we can put everything on the table, and get the GFA up and running again.

“The sooner we know what’s really going on, the sooner we can put everything on the table, and get the GFA up and running again.”

The SDLP knew exactly what was going on when SF/IRA were importing guns from Miami (and countless other breaches in the agreement) and they chose to sit on their hands. They are just as culpable for the collapse of the Belfast Agreement as those they helped break it.

  • The Renegade

It is simply laughable to say the SDLP are ‘as culpable.’ The DUP wanted to destroy it at the outset, SF messed about and kept their paramilitary buddies on the side, and the UUP can’t decide what they want. The SDLP are the only party that delivered and stuck to the principles of power-sharing and equality. If other parties took their mature and progressive line, instead of engaging in petty squabling, then maybe we might get somewhere.

Presumably so the boys can pay them a visit, eh Pat?

    The Renegade is Mark Durkan!!!

Nothing so exotic Christopher, I believe that we would be pleasantly surprised to find that the main sources of informationm would be PSNI, MI5 and various unionist politicians and umbrella groups. Not an impartial figure among them.
