No sanctuary in a cell…

A NEW Human Rights Commission report into jail conditions for women in Northern Ireland makes for depressing reading.

    I get the impression that there is an element still present in our criminal justice system that women deserve better treatment than men, that their prison sentences should be lighter and that their conditions better than those for men. It also get the impression that if a man and woman are involved in a crime there will be a sexist assumption that the man’s guilt is greater and that the “little woman” was acting under his influence, as if they cannot exercise free will.

    That said, there’s no excuse for poor treatment of prisoners, male or female.
