Political non-developments…

THE British Irish Inter-Parlimentary Body meets in Wales today, where political developments in NI will be discussed. Over the weekend, Bertie Ahern said that while fundamentals must remain, he could countenance some changes to the operation of the Agreement. Surely the two governments must publish their ‘take it or leave it’ paper this week? Expect words like ‘limbo’ and ‘drift’ in various newspaper columns if the politicians don’t get a chance to reject something by Friday, although an optimistic Dermot Ahern, who’s meeting the Secretary of State on Wednesday, suggests it could be closer to the end of the month.

GVonzo, I was reading yesterday that there are some NI representatives on the British-Irish Interparliamentary Body – does anybody know if this is true and if so which MLAs or MPs are involved ?

    Davros,

MPs John Hume and Eddie McGrady are both members (McGrady an associate member) and I think Lord Alderdice may formerly have been an associate member, but the places on the Body set aside for NI Assembly Members are unable to be taken up at present due to suspension. Thinking back pre-suspension, I recall Sean Neeson, Barry McElduff and either Joe Hendron or Carmel Hanna (well, one replaced the oher) being members, but that Sean Neeson was the only one ever to attend. And, of course, if we’re talking members from Northern Ireland, you’ve also got Brian Mawhinney and Robin Glentoran. Austin Currie was also a member until recently.

You should be able to find more information at hyperlink.

Well, that worked well — first time I’ve ever tried to use a hyperlink.

Try http://www.biipb.org before my technophobia lets me down any further!

Thanks WS- I had already been on that site and couldn’t find NI details.
