Someone- let’s just examine Mr Paterson’s proposal for NI to become an enterprise zone. 1.In order for this to happen the Assembly would need tax raising powers (only way this can be done under EU regulations).
2.Supposing Cameorn agrees, how do you think Scotland and Wales will react to NI getting these powers but not them? Badly, perhaps.
3.Would the UUP support such a move given that the main thrust of their arguement yesterday was that the Assembly is too useless to deal with the powers it’s already got never mind bunging over new powers?
4. Any shortfall in revenue would have to come out of an already squeezed block grant and given Sammy’s smart idea to freeze regional rates the pot’s getting smaller by the day.
This is another half-thought out, half-assed idea of Paterson’s rather like his “let’s build a hospital to remember the victims” idea- it was very quickly hidden away never to be mentioned again.
Perhaps you should just concentrate on beating Sylvia in North Down rahter than telling us how great Paterson is. We already know you’re bag-carrie-in-chief, you don’t have to keep proving it in public
interesting- obviously the chattering classes are finally getting pissed off with the complete hash politicans are making and are finally climbing back into the political arena to reclaim what tands to be called “the centre ground”.
Go Fearghal! (and Mike!)
Did we not have a dedicated unit? Was it not called Special Branch? IIRC Daithi and his mentors did a hell of a lot of work to put Special Branch out of business and now they want it back???
rather than look to Naomi I would be inclined to look to a recent Alliance convert to the Tory cause. the young man in question jumped following a job offer and promise of a seat somewhere- I believe it may have been North Down. It appears he’s doing his master’s bidding- his master being an Englishman with aspirations to Shaun Woodward’s job. C’est la guerre?
As I understand it, they’re not only still in, they are regarded as essential to the idea of the UCUNF project- surely it only works of there are some Tories in?. The question is why didn’t they join the UUP in the first place? Surely they’d have been welcomed with open arms- having seen the UUP list, there’s no one really jumping out other than Ringland and Nesbitt. Add McCann, Davidson and Nelson to those two and it begins to look like a game.
with regard to South Antrim I had heard Colonel Tim was in contention for Lady Hermon’s seat.
I’m begining to think there’s a large streak of anti-Catholicism to be found in IJP’s nature. He had a go a while back about “Catholic candidates” and now he’s having a wee go at the SDLP. Begins to look a bit unpleasant to say the least…
Bring back Ken Clark. He’s got experience, he’s one of the “big beasts” and he was the man who’s effort in terms of strengthening the economy allowed Labour such success for its first two terms. Also,Osborne looks like a sith-former. At least Clark’s a grown-up (sort of).
Cameron can’t be allowed to to indulge in favouritism-or be seen to-if he wishes to govern.
Mick, you’re obviously bored silly and sod all is happening at Hillsborough. Time to call it a day. elections all round- at least there’s something to do then rather than watch paint dry
Cynic2- if the Tories are willing to do a deal with DUP then it isn’t “about transforming attidues and creating a genuine non-sectarian Conservative and Unionist dynamic that provides a basis for real partnership with Nationalists” as you claim. It’s about a last ditch attempt to gain power.
Coming up to the Halloween holiday, some people might be frightened of the idea of Voices from the Grave – but for others, the chance to hear an oral history of the Troubles from the mouths of two (in)famous protagonists, PUP leader and former UVF member David Ervine, and Brendan “The Dark” Hughes, is not [...] read our review »
