I’m no fan of Earls but to his credit he had a very decent 6N. Not outstanding but much better than I expected. Defensively, he has improved hugely. I can’t see Tommy playing 13 for Ulster, Cave has been playing pretty well in that position.

I see the part-time rugby fans on Slugger have gone into hiding after a hammering by England on St Paddy’s day lol… The shame,…

Ireland didn’t turn up for a number of reasons:
    - 4th game on the bounce – looked knackered. You need to really target those massive away games. Players needed rested against Scotland to target the england game
    - key injuries: missed POC and BOD’s leadership and ability. Murray was sorely missed at 9.
    - losing the most important player on the field – tighthead never helps. Court is an excellent loosy but not a specialised tighthead. 6N should really change the rules to allow 2 props on the bench.
    - D’arcy appalling and generally has been for a year. McFadden should have been given a game or 2 this 6N. 12 and 3 are probably our weakest positions and no-one is being brought through.

well done wales – cracking tournament. Maybe not as fluid and exciting as what we expected but importantly they played WINNING rugby. Savage defense, strong runners, and played the percentages. In addition, there seems a reasonable level of depth to the squad. Should have a big contingent in the British Lions squad.

  6. Comment on Six Nations – Weekend 3
    on 25 February 2012 at 10:10 pm

Really enjoyed the wales game – incredibly physical. Wales fronted up very well – particuarly when a man down. There are no easy away games and to win at twickers, even against a limited English side is a cracking result. halfpenny was superb. Did one of ur centres go off crocked?

Wales V France would be some decider for the Slam!!!

Much better display from Ireland although Italy at home is a bit of a banker. Much more ambition and a higher intensity though which was great to see. Another 3 games on the bounce will be a big ask for a limited squad. Great to see Bowe grabbin a couple of trys – looking forward to seeing him back in an Ulster shirt next season :)

  7. Comment on Six Nations: Paris in the Spring – A day for heroes…or a cold night in hell?

Wales are a cracking side alright. Strong front 5, dynamic backrow, powerful at 9, kicking options at 10, beasts at 12 and 14, and a powerful and quick back 3. Super side playing with confidence. I really hope they win the slam but away to england (even a crap england) is a tough enough game. Haven’t seen enough of France to make a verdict but I’d imagine home advantage would see Wales through.

Personally, I love sides that play with aggression and enterprise so have no issue with support the welshies. Also why I support the ABs. Cracking entertainment.

  8. Comment on Six Nations – wide open.

Really enjoyed the game. End to end stuff in the end and high drama. Ireland had the edge up front but didn’t use it to effect. Welsh backline vastly superior in every way. No creativity from Ireland at 12 and 13 was the killer I thought.

Not the end of the world though, Ireland have a cracking pack, very good half backs and the back 3 looked good. I’d say we could win 3 of the final 4 games.

As for wales, their backline oozes class. Shame your’re missing a few key players in the tight 5. Could go all the way.

Interesting point about the size of the backs. Apart from the set-piece, the game is becoming a posh version of rugby league so you can see why sides want 15 back rowers on the park and just bosh up the opposition. Really looking forward to the Irelan -Wales game – probably the highlight of the competition. Sides may be a little rusty for it to be a classic.

    Hard to call this 6N:
Wales – cracking world cup but a heap of key injuries. Away in Eng and ireland so a tough task

Scots: decent world cup and club sides did well in the heiny. Should do okay in home games but will rattle around at the bottom of the table.

England – been crap for a while. New coach and some new blood. Probably building for next year really. Wales and ireland at home so might do okay.

France: probably the most naturally gifted side. A nice warm up game at home V italy to run in a few tries and then homers V england and ireland. Tough final game away to wales but wales may have no players left by then.

Ireland: always tough with england and france away. Win the 3 homers and a win in england and we’ll be there or thereabouts. Can’t see us winning in France and we never score too many tries so joint top is probably the best we’ll do.

In summary, if France turn up, they should walk it. But the French are rarely predictable. Wales and Ireland should push hard. England, Italy and the Scots to do okay at home but will struggle on the road.
