  2. Comment on ‘In disgust, I handed in my delegate card to Ard Fheis officials and left the RDS.’
    on 12 March 2010 at 8:47 pm

Given the time constraints that exist at every partys ard fheis or annual conference, someone who is only a ‘visitor’ shouldn’t expect to get taking up time which should be provided to ‘delegates’ who have been sent to the gathering on behalf of their branches etc?

All sorts of people get ‘visitor’ status to all parties events these days, sometimes even members of other parties!

I think this complaint is daft.

No doubt he’ll be spending some of that cash payin off the mortgage ‘squared’ for him by his good buddy Michael Fingelton, and still have enough for a few pints with his good friend from Tralee, recently up on a child-abuse related charge but with a character reference from the great author in his hip pocket to impress the beak with….

Obviously I’m the only person who is flabbergasted that the decommissioning by the UDA has provoked absolutely no comment on Slugger for almost 24 hours….

  8. Comment on “When will Sinn Fein apply these fine principles to its own President, Gerry Adams?”
    on 23 December 2009 at 6:05 pm

    Ramzi –

    1) The authorities were alerted by the victim. There is an onus on you to inform the authorities if a child informs you they were abused – its in the Children First guidelines. Gerry didn’t pass on what he knew to the police.

    2) Gerry doesnt run youth clubs, but he runs Sinn Fein, and if SF didn’t want x,y, or z person working in a youth centre in clonard then they wouldnt be working there too long.

The problem for Sinn Fein in this matter is very similar to the problem the catholic church in Dublin faces. Each had people in positions of authority who when faced with an accusation of child abuse, did not pursue it correctly. Bishops put the interests of the church first, Adams put the interests/rules of his movement first ‘Thou shalt not talk to the RUC’. Neither put the interests of children first. Bishops allowed priests to continue working in parishes even though there were allegations against them, Adams allowed his brother to continue working in a youth service, even though there were allegations against him.
Bishops have now been shamed into resigning….

  10. Comment on My Unsung Cooperation Heroes of 2009

I would like to add my voice of appreciation for all those working ‘below the radar’ on a range of peace related programmes. This is where the real long term business of peacebuilding is taking place, not in Stormont. Indeed the greatest threat to these great projects is the ‘publicity’ that politicians seem to thrive on. In a macho political culture any hint of working with ‘the other’ is seized on as a sign of weakness whereas the reality is that it is people of great strength who undertake this sort of work. Happy Christmas to you all.
