“I dont get your reference to Margaret Ritchie. Shes not on the Council and her MLA replacement is not waiting in the wings. Sean Roogers is already at Stormont.”
Ritchie still hasn’t stood down. If Sean Rodgers is at Stormont he’s not there as an MLA. Maybe working in the kitchen until Margaret goes?
Apparently Ms Ritchie is now refusing to leave the Assembly !!
Her and former MP Eddie McGrady are sore that their nominated successor was defeated by Sean Rogers and she won’t resign. Mr Rogers is not a happy chap.
Surely if she has the good of the party at heart she will want to give the new MLA as much time in post as possible to build his profile?
Or maybe it’s a case of making things as difficult as possible for the new MLA and new Party leader? What ever happened to putting the good of the Party ahead of personnality clashes?
Sean Rogers was co-oped to Newry & Mourne Council in 2008 to replace the popular Mickey Cole who dropped dead refereeing a GAA match. He’s had a high enough profile locally since and was elected in May.
Hard to believe that when Europe is is facing it’s biggest crisis since the 1930s – most posters on here are more concerned with Sinn Fein’s vote in the Irish Presidential election.
This is important. The Presidential vote wasn’t IMO.
What are the chances of a military coup in Greece?
The heads of defence were all replaced yesterday – why? Odd timing to say the least. Did the Govt suspect something was planned?
What would happen if there was a coup? Greece would he expelled from the EU and there would probably be open warfare on the streets for a time.
Could a military Govt take the hard decisions required to get the Greek economy growing, outside the EU and having defaulted on it’s debt?
I very much doubt it but some in the Greek defence forces may not agree. “Stepping forward to save the Nation in a time of national crisis” and all that…
Ed Moloney’s Voices from the Grave: Two Men’s War in Ireland has received considerable attention in the press and in the public realm since its publication earlier this year. Although the book relates the experiences of the Provisional IRA’s Brendan Hughes and the PUP/UVF’s David Ervine, much of the discussion has focused on Hughes’ stories [...] read our review »

I’m currently trawling through Norman Davies’s fabulous new tome – “Vanished Kingdoms” – Five stars in the (London) Telegraph’s review from Ben Wilson: All the nations that have ever lived have left their footsteps in the sand,” writes Norman Davies. “The traces fade with every tide, the echoes grow faint, the images are fractured, the human [...] read our review »

The public service unions could do a lot for youth unemployment if they were serious about it.
How about a ban on overtime work?
A ban on partial retirement (where a member of staff over age 60 works 3 days and gets their pension for the other 2 days).
A ban on part time working that leaves part of a job not covered eg someone working a 4 day week and no one hired to cover the 5th day.
They have no interest in such ideas because they have no intetrest in the unemployed when it may cost their members.
