After a public execution on the Shankill the party voted to maintain the link with the UVF.now that’s hardly a weakening of the relationship

Joe..the PUP project is over as a credible force..there are bigger egos within the party than Dawn’s – looking back rather than forwards

A party that has strengthened links with the UVF accusing someone else of robbing working-class unionists! catch yourself on!!

“Are you now telling us that Dawn Purvis left the PUP just to try and save her seat???

    Interesting…..”

Yep…it was the best way to save A seat for working class east Belfast – she carried on with PUP principles….unlike the party themselves who moved closer to the UVF.

The fact she polled above Brian as an independent showed she was much more electable. Sick as a parrot? She saw the writing on the wall. This is the end of the road for the PUP and they have themselves to blame.

if there are “dangerous times” ahead do you honestly think the PUP could have influenced things?

    Joe Bloggs

the UVF can’t complain about the demise of the PUP as it was them who sabotaged the working class seat in East Belfast with the Shankill business last year…and the PUP thought the link with the UVF was more important than keeping a very talented MLA in Dawn Purvis.

As the new paramilitary murals going up on the Nards road (behind the PUP billboard!) show…they will just do their own thing anyway…sabotaging the very community they claim to “defend”

the sanctioning of a public execution on the Shankill last year suggests conflict transformation might just be relevant in 2011

Darkwing yes I did read it, and the 2007 one!

re: conflict transformation – its all very well mentioning those elements separately but the 07 section on this was far more comprehensive and strategic.

It seems regressive rather than progressive compared to the last manifesto.

You’re absolutely right re: candidates being ready, willing and able. But if women’s membership declined during Dawn’s time and this is no longer the case then why not highlight it as a strength in the manifesto.

Some notable exclusions from their manifesto this time out compated to their last one. No mention (as far as I can see) of: equality/human rights, the role of women, conflict transformation, and supporting community development.

Maybe due to change in leadership and the fact that candidates are all male?

Darkwing..if the PUP had stuck to their political principles they would have ended the association with the UVF rather than strengthening it.

If the PUP had stuck to their political principles they would have continued to move to the left rather than lurching dangerously to the right since Dawn resigned.

…”As for representing the working class????? Dont make me laugh, she comes up with one report timely enough just before the election and this is working class representation?..”

And what has the PUP come up with?

“…I’ll be voting for someone who lives in East Belfast for a start who see day to day problems and not through rose tinted glasses….”

The PUP see plenty of problems, but what solutions have they come up with?

“..Photoshop worked wonders on her posters too…”

    Classy line in criticism there!

Brian is always an engaging personality!

However I struggle to understand what the PUP brings to the UVF that they don’t already have.

Are all UVF members socialist? I doubt it v strongly.

In terms of providing a voice, its well known that UVF leadership prob engage with the decision-makers here themselves..and probably more effectively than through a minority party
