If there’s such a huge number of first time and previously non voters in this constituency , why don’t they go to the bookies tomorrow, back him to win and then make sure they vote and get as many others as possible to do so as well. Worked famously in local elections in Cork 20 years ago.
Someone older and wiser tells me they can remember reports of that term being used by the late Brian Linehan ( sr. ) in the Dáil around the late sixties.
“What it demonstrates is cowardice. They were bounced the second time, not the first. I’m no fan of FF, but a well liked and competent Minister is gone for a stupid mistake that had no conceivable bearing on his fitness for office. Feeding frenzies are unattractive. This is the sort of rubbish that puts people off politics.

I find it hard to believe that any non partisan observer would hold such a view. A government minister ( also a barrister ) would have us believe that an untruth was put by mistake in an affidavit lodged in court. If that was done by a Joe Soap, he would have been up for perjury in jig time. Our beliefs have not been tested as much since Bertie claimed that the unexplained money came from backing horses.
The longer the Greens stumble around in government, the more they seem like a ” Folk Mass ” group, enjoying the limelight, but still wondering how they got there , what is holding them together and what is now expected of them.
The leap from sandals and organic vegetables to sharing office with the most corrupt and inept government this country has ever experienced has proven to be too much for them. Soon, they’ll be a mere blot on the historical map , alongside the PD’s and Aontacht Eireann.
Journo friend of mine ( regional newspaper ) speculates that the whole Lee thing was choreographed to allow him resign and replace the Birdman in Washington.
It is an interesting point and is deserving of debate in the Assembly , otherwise P.R. expects us to accept as an act of faith that he’s in the clear, rather like his declaration that God had forgiven the missus.
Fin, you would have to accept that getting the grouping who killed more Catholics than any other to stop was some achievement.
Provos have been glad of establishment assistance also, even when it came to writing speeches.
A Belfast epic, and one of my oldest poems, the opener of my first collection, Grub. The gist of the story was found in Moss & Hume’s Shipbuilders to the World: 125 Years of Harland and Wolff, Belfast, 1861-1986, which tells how Eva Peron was due to launch a huge whaling vessel in Belfast, built [...] read our review »
I share many of the concerns of Andy Pollak, whose recent post ‘My Response to the Slugger Begrudgers’ zeroed in on the ‘relentless flow of negativity’ of some Slugger commentators. Pollak’s post was largely concerned with the medium of the blog. Indeed, I think the anonymity of the online world encourages extreme discourse and allows [...] read our review »
To add to the open access treasure trove at the Royal Society, Cambridge University Library is putting online some of its collection of books, maps, manuscripts and journals. We have called the first phase of our work on the Cambridge Digital Library the Foundations Project, which runs from mid-2010 to mid-2013 and has been made possible [...] read our review »
