What now for Northern republicanism?

Thu 27 May 2010, 7:21pm

A few things have got me thinking recently. The first was the progressive election campaign by the DUP. The second was the comments by Declan O’Loan and thirdly, was the creeping nature of the dissident campaign. The end result is a mixed up collection of emotions and thoughts that I just have to get off [...] more »

Republicans and Unionists both need to look at their directions of travel

Mon 17 May 2010, 10:20pm

Guest blogger Mr Crumlin argues it is high time both Republicanism and Unionism stop coasting in the same gear they were in during the conflict. And he asks: "Does unionism genuinely want to work with their fellow countrymen in the north? If so, then it is up to republicanism once again to show leadership and to travel the extra mile for the national good." more »

This election will not be won or lost on Slugger, RTE or the Irish Times.

It will be won or lost on the streets, towns and cities of the 26 counties.

Roll on 27 October – we’ll all know soon after that.

Yeah Lionel – its called my opinion. They still seem a little stunned that the electorate turned their back on them – after all they had done for them.

I once voted SDLP – I am unlikely to do so again. I credit them (sorry Hume!) with building the infrastructure and conditions that allowed the peace process to flourish. I am old enough to remember Hume/Adams and the briefing against Hume from within the SDLP.

I have no ‘inside’ information on the SDLP – perhaps that’s the problem, those who do only have a feel for what the SDLP want, not what the electorate want. I see nothing changing with the four candidates for the leadership.

FuturePhysicist – young people are being turned off politics all across western democracies – you can blame SF and DUP on many things but pinning lower turnout on them is pushing it a little far.

The problem with the SDLP is they feel they are owed a living because ‘they were responsible for the GFA etc etc’. But people like me, who once voted SDLP but now vote SF, credit Hume not the SDLP as architects of the peace process.

There other problem is that none of the four contenders is likely to either woo young voters or older voters like me back.

    Mick

Im not sure if you have lived in anywhere like the short strand. Constantly living with the fear of attack. Ive spent much time in the Strand – witnessed attacks and intimidation. Until that threat goes away, guns will always be in the area.

But as we all know with guns comes the possibility of deaths – god only knows what would happen after that. I just hope the UVF winds its neck in and takes its fustrations out on those reponsible – the DUP and UUP.

Just watched UTV – so this was because the DUP/UUP doesnt listen to loyalism? Is that what Jim Wilson was saying? So elected representatives ignore Protestant working class issues so the UVF attack Catholics? What utter nonsense.

  7. Comment on A return of the optimistic view of parade resolution, Crumlin Road style..
    on 18 June 2011 at 7:19 pm

    Great post Chris.

    Here’s my solution.

The OO march past the Ardoyne in the morning – residents hold a dignified protest – then the OO get the bus home that night.

Therefore the nationalist residents are not hemmed in for the rest of the day, yet the OO have fulfilled their ‘basic human right’.

This would mean the alcohol fuelled hangers on would have nothing to hang on for.

    Just an idea.

Seriously thats the answer – to get from A to C you have to go through B?? Isnt there buses?

Heres a compromise for the 12th.

The orangemen march past the Ardoyne in the morning – maybe the residents hold a dignified protest (as always in the morning) but the OO get a bus home and the area is not hemmed in for the whole day. Tensions are defused and marching and protest take place before the drink and hanger-ons get involved. Now what is wrong with that idea?

I honestly do not understand the mentality of walking and marching where you are not wanted – infact where you are hated. Why on earth would anyone want to go there?

I have spent many a good night at a wolfe tone concert. One of the reasons they are great nights is that I am in a concert hall with strangers who think like me – no trouble, no one offended, nothing like that.

By all means march until your feet hurt – up and down the Shankill, Woodvale, all the side streets and the main roads – even march into the town centre. But for the love of everything that is decent stay away from nationalist areas.

Comrade – As for gay pride – I think you will find they parade in Belfast city centre – shared space. But I like your idea – let the gay pride parade go up the Falls and down the Shankill – that is what you meant, right?
