From the ‘Hero of Clontibret’ to ‘St Peter the Martyr’ to ‘Trailer Park Conspirator’ in just 2 days….its all so ‘Lagan Valley PTA’
The key point, and Mick Fealty got it exactly right on Wednesday, is that this is now a test for serious journalism. The BBC don’t actually deserve as much praise in this instance as one might think. This is 1/very high profile and ‘scandalous’ and 2/the conscientious Mr. Black and a willing Mr. McCambley made it easy (and probably cheap) to put on air. Don’t get me wrong here, it was an excellent piece, but it was reportage rather than investigative journalism. The Media here, with a very few exceptions, have traditionally walked away from many an important story because it wasn’t ‘handy’. The ‘everybody knows but nobody talks’ mentality doesn’t help.
The Media need to start earning their keep across the political spectrum…a good place to start might be the drafting of the Castlereagh Council criteria in the advertising of the Cafe franchise, and a close look at the financing of the construction and maintenance of the Robinson Family Compound might be another. The apparently phenomenally high turnover of the Cafe might be worth a look also.
On the broader front, the continuing secrecy in regards to the donations made to Political Parties here is a scandal which the Media have left to one side for years….of course the ongoing presence of the fringe ‘Jehadi Paddys’ and ‘Psyco Billies’ are very useful here as they could ‘terrorise’ named donors…handy that.
I wonder what would happen to donors who hedge their bets by cross funding the Parties? Those names might raise a few eyebrows.
We are trapped in the ‘Long Fraud’ that is the Troubles and Ulster Politics. The core electorate of Party zombies won’t change that….good journalism and conscientious whistle-blowers can.
