RobertEmmett I think everyone now knows that SF are the last people anyone would believe about anything. After 40 years of conflict they have managed to move forwrad to being ministers in a devolved British parliament. They should now make the next move and take the oath at Westminister. Clearly the OO has a major role to play. Perhaps Sir Reg will pop around for tea again to discuss South Belfast.
I think this is a natural consequence of the Fermanagh ST shift by the conservatives to look at each constituency on a case by case basis. After all Tom Elliott is a recently retired County Grand Master of Fermanagh Lodge and a senior member of Gran Lodge of Ireland. His influence in these issues would have significant sway.
My my! A new pantomime for Christmas – Gerry in Wonderland! What exactly is Gerry proud off – was he an armchair general puffing his pipe with his slippers on whilst the volunteers sloged it out with the British? I am sure the families of the Loughgal PIRA members, etc are proud of Gerry’s public version of his ‘war’. Has the cock crowed thrice this Easter for Gerry?
I wonder could Francie Molloy explain to the relatives of Martin Hurson why Gerry Adams, Martin M and the IRA leadership conspired to allow Martin and 6 other hungerstrikers to die knowing that the British had offered a deal that would have ended the hungerstrike. Such an explanation would be a good start to solve some of the disunity problems.

Are you suggesting that the DUP Lawyers may soon need to return to practice in the courts? It is no wonder there is a backlog of cases in the courts when it takes 3 years for lawyers to produce arguments that are summarised in a few pages. I suppose they were on Stormont Aid.
Lets not get acarried away. Fudge takes a lot of time to prepare! The DUP had to spend X amount of days in the kitchen to prove they are hard workers.
This agreement will be like St Andrews – the out working of the legislation will bear no reflection on the platitudes in the agreement. The endless nights of discussion will be reflected in the side deals and the pre negotiated details of the Bill on parading. If you read all the parts of the document you will note that the text is written in different tenses. “The working group HAS been tasked….” This would lead one to believe that the members have already been identified and have been working away in the background and their outcomes are already known. I hope some of the inspired investigative journalists who use this blog will challenge the appointed members about when they became involved etc…
On another point any MLA can nominate the justice Minister but next Monday the First Minister and his Deputy will consider applications of interest from the party leaders and they will then identify which candidate they believe …. So much for the chance of any MLA nominating the best qualified or experienced person do the job. The justice Minister will be vetted along sectarian lines rather than legal/policing or prison experience – although if experience of prison was a requirement there would be a lot of very experienced candidates.
Finally the only part which I feel the TUV will agree with is that Royal Assent is still required – at least the DUP can sell that fact to their community.
It’s just as well Gerry A rolled up his sleeves. Where would be be do day if he hadn’t? Maybe I have missed something? – off course SF have the vision of bioptic bats. They can see a great future – darkness the same as in the past.
The 2009 council election in the republic returned 127 councillors and the SF site now records 109 so there seems to have been some shrinkage. Perhaps a number are suspended and we have not been informed.
The oft-quoted verse from the book of Proverbs, ‘where there is no vision, the people perish,’ (chapter 29, verse 18) opens a new book by Gerry O’Hanlon, A New Vision for the Catholic Church: A View from Ireland (Columba Press, 2011). That verse could be considered an apt summary of the current state of the [...] read our review »
This was a book that I first reviewed at the same time as “Unionism Decayed” back in 2008. Like Vance’s work, it is the author’s portrayal of a defeated political movement or ideal and as a Unionist it was instructional to read an interpretation of the immediate post-Agreement period from the other side of the fence. I’m currently trawling through Norman Davies’s fabulous new tome – “Vanished Kingdoms” – Five stars in the (London) Telegraph’s review from Ben Wilson: All the nations that have ever lived have left their footsteps in the sand,” writes Norman Davies. “The traces fade with every tide, the echoes grow faint, the images are fractured, the human [...] read our review »
