  1. Comment on Now here’s a thought. The Union Jack is not the flag of Unionism
    on 11 January 2013 at 3:34 am

Support for the Union Flag among ethnic minorities in England maybe stronger than people think.Recently in Hong Kong there has been some flag waving by protesters-the old colonial flag!
I would have thought the flag of Unionism in Northern Ireland is the Ulster Banner.
Fly a council flag at Belfast City Hall. The Belfast city logo looks good and it makes a nice flag.

  2. Comment on Is Northern Ireland less Irish than the Republic of Ireland?
    on 12 September 2012 at 3:11 pm

Within Europe political boundries don’t always include all those of single nationality. Is a Hungarian less of a Hungarian if he or she lives in Transylvania?
What about all those Irish who live in other countries?
Do they stop being Irish when they emigrate?
    I always called it Éire.

  3. Comment on Anders Behring Breivik: murderer, fascist; and object of derision?
    on 28 August 2012 at 4:01 am

Breivik may not be insane in the sense that he has some kind of mental illness but he is clearly a psychopath.
Another psychopath who has been in the news is Ian Brady, someone who was an admirer of the Nazis.
These people have to be kept locked away.

National Democracy? The kind of democracy that existed in the German Democratic Republic or the present day Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
British withdrawal from Burma didn’t bring peace by the way.
There has been 60 years of civil war brought about by those who want to impose their ways on everybody regardless of religion or ethnicity.

    New century-new approach.
These young people are clearly suffering from depression.
Grab those who are rioting sign a section order and then give treatment.Remember One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.Believe me a mental hospital is much worse than a jail. This will cure all the lunacy of the IRA and any other paramilitaries.

  6. Comment on New Tories, old Tories, what’s the difference?
    on 2 February 2012 at 1:52 am

    Comrade
The Belfast Labour Party founded in 1892 was one of the earliest socialist parties in the UK was not really an import.
Socialism is now of course almost dead.
The Conservative and Unionist Party was the name of the Tory party in England until 1965 so in that sense it is an import but think of it as Lord Feldman’s Laugh-In show.
The (Marty) Feldman show used to end with a man speaking in a mock German accent saying- “very interesting but stupid”.

  7. Comment on Salmond invades Dublin in pursuit of Glasgow’s Labour vote?
    on 15 January 2012 at 4:26 am

Salmond will not be invading Burma nor meeting Aung San Suu Kyi anytime soon.Burma that Northern Ireland of the British Empire had its Scots. They ran the river boats. There are Anglo-Burmese with a Scottish ancestry.
The SNP wants independence for Scotland but will it support an independent Karen state.
The Karens have struggled for more than sixty years for an independent country against real oppression from their Burmese rulers.
Scotland wants to play a world role so lets hear what the so called nationalists have to say about a part of the world they had strong connections to.

  12. Comment on Did Christopher Hitchens have a Big Idea?
    on 20 December 2011 at 1:45 am

I don’t think Hichens will leave a lasting legacy.
Other atheists (Ayer,Russell…) and other advocates of free speech far outshine him.

    Rory
You are right. The links which some rank and file members of the International Socialist boasted of were probably non-existant which was just as well for their sakes. I regarded it as an idle boast at the time. Remember this was just a tiny fringe group so someone such as Hitchens was fairly prominment.I threw out my copies of International Socialism long ago but I am sure Hitchens was indeed a contributor.
With the passing of The Great Leader,.anyone got any of those super dollars?

  17. Comment on The problem of communicating DC to DC?
    on 19 December 2011 at 6:00 am

Hichens remarks on David Cameron are just sour grapes.
In his youth Hichens clearly had political ambitions but it was his lack of understanding of “the working class” that prevented him from making any real advancement in British politics.
During his time as a leading member of the International Socialists, this group was boasting about its links to the Provisional IRA.

    on 17 December 2011 at 2:18 am

I first heard his name from the journal International Socialism So much for revolutionary students!
In middle age they become good beneficaries of capitalism
In those days I was very anti-clerical but those left wing students weren’t interested in anything to do with the the church.. It seems he stole my thunder.

The US has long had a military presence in East Asia.
The main difficulty in US-China relations is American arms sales to Taiwan.
