I love the way the RTE newsreaders refer to “the Icelandic volcano” rather than try to pronounce it! Don’t blame them!!

“Whatever its faults, the Republic is settled, cohesive and self-contained. Why on earth would its people want to gamble all in some new dispensation with nearly two million troublesome Northerners – most particularly if it were the case that a substantial number of their erstwhile neighbours were being dragged into something against their will?”
A similar argument can be made as to the formation of the unstable Northern State with a 30% minority being dragged into it against their will. Why does David Adams feel an unstable Northern Ireland with a present day 40-45% minority, is more preferable to an unstable United Ireland with a 20% minority?

I suspect he’ll leave the money with the soccer club. Not that he’ll get any credit for doing so by the likes of Miriam Lord.

Comment on “While we are a city of culture there has to be a recognition that we’re not part of the UK.”

I hope Derry becomes the UK’s City of Culture in the same way as I hoped Tyrone’s Peter Canavan would be voted the BBC’s Sportsman Of The Year a few years ago. Canavan was clearly robbed. Everyone knows he topped the poll. The BBC knew he wasn’t really British so discarded the result. Derry hasn’t a hope.

Comment on Unity Won’t Solve Ireland’s Two Major Problems

Maybe in time to come a couple of linguistically qualified MLAs will attend the Nordic Council as observers, in order to see how good neighbours get on with each other.

If everyone starts behaving well and respecting each other perhaps the NI Assembly may in time become known as the Nordie Council!

Comment on Trevor Sargent resigns from Irish Government

Could be an FF/Lab/SF coalition with a Labour Taoiseach. Labour if they decide on a deal with FG (and SF??)will be able to demand Kenny’s head quite easily as part of the deal but the new FG leader will still be Taoiseach. Labour and SF would be able to negotiate more cabinet seats out of a weakened FF rather than FG. Interesting election ahead whenever it comes!
