A poem for the day – Launching the Whaler Juan Peron
A Belfast epic, and one of my oldest poems, the opener of my first collection, Grub. The gist of the story was found in Moss & Hume’s Shipbuilders to the World: 125 Years of Harland and Wolff, Belfast, 1861-1986, which tells how Eva Peron was due to launch a huge whaling vessel in Belfast, built [...] read our review » -
Do Words Matter?: Book Review of Political Discourse and Conflict Resolution – Debating Peace in Northern Ireland
I share many of the concerns of Andy Pollak, whose recent post ‘My Response to the Slugger Begrudgers’ zeroed in on the ‘relentless flow of negativity’ of some Slugger commentators. Pollak’s post was largely concerned with the medium of the blog. Indeed, I think the anonymity of the online world encourages extreme discourse and allows [...] read our review »

“You can see Newton’s mind at work…”
To add to the open access treasure trove at the Royal Society, Cambridge University Library is putting online some of its collection of books, maps, manuscripts and journals. We have called the first phase of our work on the Cambridge Digital Library the Foundations Project, which runs from mid-2010 to mid-2013 and has been made possible [...] read our review »

Mark you really are a nuisance. Do try and keep my name OUT of your posts when posting. What in God’s name am I doing in your head at after eleven at night?
Mick tells me you are wrong to be speculating about who is who anyway.
Let me put it straight for you. Next time I’m going to the cops – end off. I’ve been in touch with them already. Keep my name OUT of your posting and keep me out of your head. Get some therapy it may help.

Gary I’ve decided not to moderate anymore, it’s too much hassle. I will simply close a particular comment for mick fealty to moderate or otherwise when he gets to it…
Best way all round I think.
Meanwhile….

Garibaldy we can’t ask people to come for interviews and have them abused by faceless people. If everybody stuck to the ball and stopped playing the man there’d be no need for any moderation….

ok Turgon heres the deal. I don’t cause chaos in your threads don’t do it on mine. I don’t blog here under your direction, but Micks. You’ve played the man and woman in this thread. Enough!!!
I’m just off the phone to mick…
Now stop playing the person and stick with the remit. You’ve posed questions and I’ll deliver them with the same courtesy as the rest. Thats it…

?? and Cahal. Slugger would like to begin conversations with all sides no matter who they are. Our political institutions are full of people who have done time for one reason or another. Now there has been 3 way discussion about this and other threads. Everybody is to be afforded the commenting policy as is site rules. This is what mick wants, and its his site.
If you have a desire to ask anything outside of the remit, please feel free to go about it yourself. Meanwhile the remit stands. We hope to go further with these discussions, engaging people on line on various issues, we can’t ask them to come on here and be mauled by faceless people with names like ??

Dec we have to stick within our remit for the interview. Sorry. Mick has stated that Billy is entitled to the same respect as anyone else, which he is, so we need to stick to our remit.

Comrade pointing out the quotations and asking if I’d overlooked them,or forgotten them, and posing it as a question rather than going off on a rant, and attacking someone personally from behind your anon wall…. thats pretty cowardly. No one is infallible. We all make mistakes. You could have queried first before attacking someone by assuming all sorts of things without asking them first. Play ball. If you have more queries – ask, if you have a complaint take it to mick… o wait you might have to put your name to it and that would involve a little courage wouldn’t it?

Comment on Experience in political conflict. (Loyalists and Prison Officers speak.)
on 25 January 2009 at 4:44 am
If I can I’ll write it out. WT I listened to it there again and if you turn up your volume, you can more or less catch it. We’d been to Armagh to cover the conference, and by the time we got to this event, we didn’t have much power left, with no power point and we couldn’t link into their sound system, and we had to film under very strict conditions, but we got what we could. Thats why the PO video is a little out of focus, not enough power in the battery, unfortunately we’re not the BBC…..:)

The Official IRA were republicans as well.
Indeed they were Picador, but their experiences of being behind the wire is different to that of the provisionals. One aspect that came through in the play was the difference between the loyalist experience and that of republicans. While republicans are on blanket protest etc the loyalists are concerned about the 12th July, and plonk. The contrast is stark, and the play brings it out well.
The role of the prison officer hasn’t been explored in our literature and plays as much as it could be. Maybe this is the next story to be told.
I was very impressed with this play. It’s the actors that make it a success, not props or lights but good acting. Good ulster humour with the teasing between the Derry and Belfast men, and a great ending….
I couldn’t recomend it more.

Re welcome to the whitehouse Mr Obama. Again based on the expansion of government and the stimulus package. Very little attention was given to Hilary Clintons hearings to confirm her as secretary of state. She sounded awfully like her husband, and not all that different from Bush. Not much change there. I wonder how long it will take to change from tea and biscuits to criticism?
As for Bush and underestimating him? Thats a possibility after Condi’s latest performance.

Re the euro mick. It’s not only Ireland in a bad way, Greece Spain and Italy are all basket cases. The situation with the dollar is different. It’s not only the US but Europe too that is pinning hopes on Obama and his stimilus package. None of us will get out of the slump until America lifts its self out, but the rest of the world doesn’t really know how Obama will play this. He may go down an economic isolationist path, and there are still fears in that country, what if one of the big three was to go under?
These are very unstable economic times and no one really knows whats in store, but I wouldn’t blame any drop in the euro on Ireland alone.

Comment on He’s a thug, he’s somebody who uses violence….

Cut the bull on Nolan this morning Mohammed said he didn’t call Harry a thug, but compared him to one. When later in the show, they read his words back to him, he put his hands up to it. Calling someone a thug is no way to counter racism or bullying. If Mohammed wants no offence he shouldn’t give it.

My main point for this thread, is that it’s not ok to call someone a thug and then say you are offended by their remarks. It’s somewhat different to the earlier thread because of that.

“It’s all about the recession?”
I was sure I had cautioned earlier against inaccurate simplification..
There is a very straight-forward, and valid, message there – “always look on the bright side of life” As we head deeper into recession that’s advice worth heeding.
.
You’re right pete, I only got the recession part, when it was really about looking on the bright side of life heading into the recession….in the monty python crucifixation video it was a little difficult to see where that was – the recession part you know
It didn’t offend you? Glad to hear it.
Little monty never offended me pete. Weren’t the controversial cartoons hilarious? Some of those men in frocks can be dangerous.
ANYhoo.. the Solstice was a few days ago..
I got the feeling from your post on the solstice you were interested in it, didn’t look like you were having a laugh at it. Quite a quaint little thing I thought, rather nice.
Hope you had a lovely day.
